DevKWat 2,370
You’d think it’s a good deal for us considering we rejected a permanent bid from Galatasary and PAOK have had to rush negotiations because of an injury to their striker.

kentucky 341
I thought the idea of an Academy is to find those diamonds in the rough , kids who are exceptional ,can step up whether 16 or older, stand out become hero's bring the fans in , have we found a Ramirez or Grealish lately , not run of the mill ,lower league tryers , either we can't find them or their skills are not recognized , or their enthusiasm is coached out of them. You can't stand still if you want to be successful , you must have high standards and demand it, in the world of top professional clubs, you can't become a charity shop, it can be done , but it takes strong leadership.

This feels like an absolute word salad. Academies are there to produce footballers. How many Grealish's do you think come through academies? There's a reason he just cost 100m ffs, there's not a bunch of Grealish's in other academies around the country. Yes you want to produce the best players you can but they can't all be stars. Reliably churning out football league talent is actually very good to be honest.

Surely you can’t be talking about Gaston Ramirez here. He’s a failed premier league midfielder who’s probably achieved about as much in his career as Ben Gibson.

How is Ramirez failed he is littely bossing it in the Seria A I don't like how he sulked as we didn't accept Lecister bid but it is what it was. He was the main reason we got the 28 points we did in that season and the major reason we got to the premiership in the first place
Snowblind 1,734
Right - think I've caught up with the thread? Main points: - Everything is *** - God is dead - Warnock is a bit of a ***. Covered?

He was absolutely the catalyst who came in at just the right time and pushed us over the line. I was only pointing out that it’s a strange comparison to make by the OP as he’s not exactly achieved anything of note in his career. He failed to cut it with Southampton, Hull, and then with us. If you’re comparing career acolades alone he’s won the Uruguay top division about 10 years ago and a promotion from the championship with us.
Duvel 2,446
We're gonna finish somewhere around 10th, I've thought this all summer and when your expectations are low then being a Boro fan is easier. Its also an important life lesson, aim low and then you'll never be disappointed. 2 1

He was literally our best player, how did he not cut it with us? Since leaving us he's been playing in Serie A consistently, and also being a Uruguay international too. I think apart from his attitude has achieved enough to class him as a good footballer.

Redcar Rioja 5,974
Before the Academy set up we had Players like Tony Mowbray, Gary Pallister, Stuart Ripley, Willie Maddren, David Mills, David Hodgson and arguably even Graeme Souness and Craig Johnston coming up through the ranks or at least being rehabilitated in the case of Souness after failing at Spurs. Academy era, we have had Stewart Downing, Brad Jones, Adam Johnson, Ben Gibson etc. The interesting thing is that they seem to come through in groups rather than individually. There are lots of others of course but Downing and Pallister are two of the more stand out "successful" ones in terms of career highs. I think I would rather have an Academy than not but the Rioch era was seemingly just as successful which may have been simply down to a mixture of opportunity and needs at the time. There has undoubtedly been plenty of players that have come through the system to make good careers in the game but very few real top class stars of the game considering the facilities and cost of running the Academy.
