RiseAgainst 3,793
Robson-Kanu is a winger who ended up playing up front, probably due to a dearth of striking options. A reverse Stuani, if you like. He might work in a 4-4-2, playing alongside a poacher, but as a lone striker, he'd be pretty inept. I hope this is just paper talk, because I've seen far better prospects being linked. Even Wyke would give me more confidence given how prolific he's been (at a lower level, but still). Yes, it's true, we don't need a prolific striker if the whole team is contributing goals. But what have you seen from Warnock's reign so far that suggests the whole team will chip in with goals, rather than lumping it into the box and hoping the lone striker can batter it in?

Raheem Sterling is better than anything we have...actually, scratch that - bad example. But you get what I'm saying, I hope. We could sign an amazing, prolific striker, with fantastic career stats...but if the team doesn't create goalscoring opportunities for them, they aren't going to do much. As others have said, the way we play at the moment requires our forwards to be able to win the ball and hold it up, to bring our midfield into play, more than sticking the ball in the net. So we have to find a player who is A) capable of doing that and B) is happy to play the workhorse role. Edited June 2, 2021 by AnglianRed
Humpty 3,261
Joe Bennett released on a free by Cardiff. There's a good example of a player that would improve the first team at a reasonable cost.

He's left because he couldn't agree terms with Cardiff so might be out of our range, plus he'd be 2nd fiddle to Bola.

If he left Cardiff because he couldn't agree terms he might not be a reasonable cost at all. I also have doubts as to whether he's actually an upgrade on Bola anyway.
Humpty 3,261
You could be right regarding wages scally but i don't think there's much between him and Bola. I'd probably prefer Bennett myself but i understand that's personal preference.

He'd at least be competition, and probably on par in terms of ability. It'd be nice to have players fighting for each place in the starting XI, which we haven't really had in many positions over recent years.
Will 2,958
Would be happy with Bennett at a reasonable price. Would mean there was little difference in quality between our two starting options.

Saville, McNair and Watmore have contributed with their fair share of goals, for the positions played .. Saville has shown the skills we bought him for ... A goal scoring BTB player. And if we had had a big lump, they might have scored more, with runs in to the box, when Mr. Lump had the ball. That aside, I don't want us to sign Kanu unless it's a young Nwanke!
