Can games be fixed ?

Recommended Posts

Just watched a doc on American sports about games being fixed , its driven by Vegas and betting,

How they minipulated the result ,was by giving the refs more power, on the control of the game, and of course some of them were tapped .

We notice now VAR is now in our football , and decisions are made off the field, and considering the game is global is it possible?

Would have thought VAR makes it less likely, rather than more. Before VAR, if a ref made a decision, it stood, even if replays on TV showed it to be totally wrong. As long as the ref could argue a reasonable case for making a decision ( e.g. being unsighted/fooled by a player diving etc.), then he might get away with it.

With VAR any contentious decision will be reviewed by the VAR official and if the ref is told to review it again, he can’t use the excuses above for a wrong decision - he has to overturn it.
With assistant refs being told not to raise a flag immediately for offside, it makes it more difficult for them to affect a match result, as VAR will rule on the offside.
The VAR official himself can only affect a result by trying to get the ref to change his mind. It is possible he could just not tell  the ref to review a wrong decision that should be overturned, but that requires an obvious error by the ref in the first place.

with goal line technology there is no scope there for a ref making a “wrong” decision and in any case the chances of there being a goal line incident are too random for a betting coup.

All in all the use of VAR surely makes the game less open to fixing results? Easier to stick to betting on number of bookings/corners etc. where there is no VAR involvement - which is probably why they investigated the recent Arsenal game for odd betting practices when Xhaka was booked.

Xhaka getting booked is normal practice. The guy gets a yellow in practically every game that he plays. Surely it would be odds on for him to get booked 🤷‍♂️

I think with VAR it is definitely less likely as it is much harder to fool the video, but it was definitely possible to fix games - even top level games - just a few years ago. Look at the Italians.

One of our friendlies was fixed a few years ago, nobody noticed at the time.

Whilst result fixing is more difficult it has been done (and probably still is). What you find with most ‘match fixing’ is that there are based on specific bets or spreads which can be influenced ie time of first yellow, number of corners etc rather than the result of a match.

the Far East has a big gambling market and much of the spread or spot betting occurs there.

According to the Times, there was £50k put on him getting booked. Somehow the odds were 5 to 1 so bookies paid out £250k. They concluded so much was put on because the bookies cocked up the odds rather than any fiddle!

Yep. Less common at the highest level but still happens. Fixing like this is less likely to be spotted as it often doesn't alter the overall out come of a match. It's something data collectors are asked to watch out for.

There has also been a rise in events being deliberately misrecorded in order to manipulate in-play betting markets (eg deliberately recording a card being awarded to the wrong player). This happened in a Champions league match just two seasons ago and resulted in arrests being made after it was spotted.

In this doc it mentions how the media company's now run the show, TV tries to create excitement in order for more viewership, Tom Brady for instance produces bigger numbers than other Quarterbacks , so do the refs protect him.The NFL is much more prone for inside nonsense, Tennis too.

Could the offside line be minipulated on VAR , from a tech guy, you wouldn't know

No.

Obviously you get the odd instance of players and refs on the take, but those are isolated incidents and usually dealt with very quickly.

I can't see football ever being influenced by gambling to that extent.

The Italians managed it!

Its been a thing in cricket for a long time, with bets being put on wickets being taken in certain overs, no-balls / wides / byes being bowled, batsmen making a certain amount of runs etc.

Think it only really came to light when those Pakistani cricketers were charged with match fixing, though it goes back a lot further than that. About 20 years ago, South African skipper Hansie Cronje and some of his team mates were found guilty of match fixing.

Just before that, Cronje was found to have "accepted gifts" from a bookmaker while England were on tour there, to make an early declaration in the final match of the series.

But since then spot betting on relatively innocuous things has become a massive market. Less likely to draw attention and safer for those involved.

I wouldn't be surprised. Any on-screen graphics can be altered, I would imagine. But VAR is a pretty new system, compared with other sports that have used video refereeing for decades, so I'd imagine if any "manipulation" is going in, its pretty limited at the moment.

But given how long the decisions tend to take, I could certainly see a market for spot bets on goals being disallowed, players being given offside etc.

Damn, now you've got me thinking about Hawkeye in tennis and DRS in cricket!

Offer a compromised player enough and they might be tempted. A goalkeeper with huge gambling debts who sees a way out with a big payoff might just let a weak shot slip past him, and who could prove it was a conscious decision?

If someone is willing to take a bet on something then you can be sure there is a way to guarantee a result if you got the resources to do it.

Singapore seems to be a great hub for those people that like to have an advantage in their bets. It’s not the results now that are the main target as the result can get changed or voided, it’s the little things that you can arrange that won’t get the result questioned.

I don’t bet, but for those that do can you confirm it’s the result that makes all the other bets on it valid. Eg the result is Boro 6- Coventry 4

as long as that’s ok any bets on no’s of card or minutes of bookings are also ok?
