Humpty 3,246
We're high on him because we know how good he is at this level, not because he's a Boro boy. That's just a bonus.

I agree with you on the left-side centre back, knows the club and is proven at this level to be a competent defender. I’m not sure in regards to him being that much of a leader but it’s difficult to say given his last two clubs. I disagree with the statements that he’s comfortably on the ball, passing/dribbling and carrying the ball out of defence. If I’m being honest he’s relatively poor at them. I don’t think he’d suit our system either with the overlapping WCB’s. He’ll be overpriced given they paid £8m for him last summer. I wouldn’t say no to him if the price was right at something like £3m-£4m. I wouldn’t expect him to be like McNair or Dijksteel with the ball at his feet. Having said that, if you could combine him with a LWB that can offer a lot going forward but also be able to do the defensive side of the game like Jones/Spence then it would be good for us. At 29, I do expect him to return to the club at some point over the next 2-3 seasons though. Probably with a year left on his contract on the cheap or when it ends. Unfortunately, people are clouded with their judgement simply because he’s a Boro lad. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have him, because for the right price I would but some of the attributes you think he has, he doesn’t in my opinion. Naisby 736
Players returning to former clubs is always a decidedly risky move, the expectations are always higher and the time given to settle in is such that imho I’d never resign a former player. There are always exceptions to the rule but a player who was good in an earlier squad was younger played with different team mates and under a different management and playing style. I’d rather go for someone who wants to play for us and the manager wants rather than the usual he is local, played for us before route. Gibson however is possibly an odd exception though so I can see why he is being mentioned as a possible new signing, but I would look at the records of all players who return to a previous club Boro or elsewhere and their records are not that good, as I mentioned above the expectations and allowances made mean that they have to slot in and perform to their previous best levels on their debuts anything less and the debate and factionalism between fans views are there from the start. Would agree most people who return are normally not close to what they used to be and that's usually the reason they have come back when they were at one point top rated talent moving on to better things. I used to bring my step son who's a pools supporter to the matches through the karanka/monk/pullis years and remember showing him the 8-1 thrashing of city years ago and he could not get over that was the same stuart downing that he would watch every week, he thought was someone else with the same name lol

A few names he mentioned going with the dodgy criteria i made up. Keenan Bennetts, Omar Richards outside of Germany Matthew Sorinola and possibly Danny Loader I know nothing about any of them - Bennetts (Forward) on paper doesn't look like the answer to our lack of goals. Haven't really seen a lot of him though to be fair, so can only judge him on his stats. - Richards (Left-back) I thought always looked decent at Reading, offensively seems a bit lacking stats wise, but I recall him being pretty good at getting up the left hand side and supporting attacks. If we are wanting someone on the mold of Jones (but on the left), Richards probably isn't it. - Sorinola (Left-back) can't say I've seen much of him since he's moved to Belgium. But I'm sure we were linked with him in the past when he was at MK Don's. He's 21 but bare in mind he's only really had one full season at League One level. From what I remember he looked decent at MK. - Loader (Forward) might be an interesting pick up, he was highly rated at Reading. He didn't play much in the Championship, but that last season he fell out of favour. He's still only 21 and this season has been doing well in the Portuguese 2nd Division. With the way Norwich move up and down I can't imagine them not putting clauses like that in, when they sign players. 20k in the Championship and 40k in the Prem.
