Latin for left is “sinister”, so anyone left footed, or left handed was seem to be inferior. Kids in school used to get rapped on knuckles for trying to right with left hand. Used by both Catholics and Protestants as a derogatory term for each other.

It's a religious bigotry thing very common in the Central Belt of Scotland and Northern Ireland and to a lesser degree the ROI. Left Footers are Catholics and Right Footers are Protestant, jibes such as "he digs with his left foot" are commonplace even today, a less than subtle way of informing someone that the person they are talking about is from "the other side". A less common one is "he wears red socks", the Pope allegedly always wears or wore Red Socks thus the individual is a Catholic (not that they were actually wearing Red Socks just to be clear). This is the reason Celtic fans are called Left Footers.

Pretty sure it was because of the huge Irish immigrant population. Hence the Catholic cathedral amongst other things.

Just consulted my Boro bible and Middlesbrough Ironopolis existed alongside MFC. They formed as a breakaway club due to an argument amongst the members over whether or not to remain amateur or become a professional club. MFC chose to remain amateur while Ironopolis went pro. As a matter of fact the "Nops" created a bit of footballing history by becoming the first club to be registered as a limited liability company. It was short-lived though (1885-1894) as they eventually went bankrupt. MFC's fortunes were on the up though. They won the Northern League championship 1893-4 and the FA Amateur Cup twice, before finally winning Football League status in 1899. Blanco 4,916
Caoimhin Kelleher has just told the Irish media that he doesn’t think he wants to stay on the bench at Liverpool and will probably look for a loan next season. I would be happy with him at the Boro. Anyone else?
