Tommy Smith is certainly experienced with 240 championship games and 39 PL games. Just turned 30 so in his prime as a defender. Don't know much about him though, but I'd guess Wilder will see him as a solid backup for Jones.

I mean it seems to be the going rate for players who have a decent season (Saville had a blinder the year before we signed him and that was a few years ago now) so I think the majority of neutrals would say the lad had a great season the year before, so the fee doesn't seem over the going rate unfortunately.  Not sure why the comment was strange.

I think him saying that he wants to stay in Europe is just a casual expression in that he isn't planning on returning to playing football in Argentina anytime soon. I'm guessing that in a similar context he may say to an interviewer over here that he wasn't planning to return to South America as oppose to Argentina or specifically Banfield or Boca or whoever.
