BORO v Coventry - Semi Final 2nd Leg 0-1

Recommended Posts

Still anyone's game this. We controlled well in the first half of the last game and really should have got our noses in front. I hope we don't live to regret it.

We seemed to take our foot off the gas (or forced to) in the second half which allowed them far too much of the ball to be comfortable with. Though it did show that we can actually defend. Lenihan and McNair were superb.

But at the end of the day it was a job well done. I believe we will have enough to see it through. Though I am still bloody nervous. And I don't even want to think about penalties.

Coventry fans seem pretty level headed. Some comments in board below.

Most think we will nick it. But as we all know. This is a knockout game. Anything can happen.

Was probably posted last night in the first, but I'll include it in here anyway.

I did find it funny that Carrick was laughing about Dumb and Dumber and the "so you're saying there's a chance" quote in the pre-match press conference and then this happens and McNair looks like the character from it.

Thought we were very much in control yesterday and came through without any injuries. Good to see Forss back, so I think he's going to start as he's developed a good understandig with Chuba nd Archer since the turn of the year.

We should have enough about us to beat these but you just know that anything can happen. A single lapse in concentration could mean a goal by Gyokeres, and then things could get nervy. Hopefull Chuba gets an early chance again and buries it to settle the nerves a bit.

I reckon we're going to win 2-0 but it's not going to be easy.

we never had any issues with penalties in the past, I dont think we will have much of an issue in the event of a shoot out, its a bit like flipping a coin anyways,

if we can win them with Lumley in goal then there is hope there even without him on the pitch

Still, I'd much rather win in normal time. Carrick is usually pretty positive with his team selections and tactics and I would expect him to stay true to form.

Even if we are decent at penalties I would much rather avoid them, if possible...just to spare my blood pressure and nerves!

1: Unchanged team selection?

I thought we looked unexpectedly lethargic up front on Sunday, so I'd replace Jones with Forss. I was really disappointed with Archer on the day, but in Ramsay's absence, I'm not sure we have a ready-made replacement. Chuba seemed a bit out of sorts too, but here's hoping he'll rediscover his mojo when it's most needed.

2: Would you start Howson with 85 % if this was an FM game?

I would leave Mowatt in, but give Howson half an hour at the end, with a view to him starting the final. Mowatt has had some good games lately, but Howson remains our best midfielder IMHO.

3: Will Paddy 'IRON FLAKES FOR BREAKFAST' McNair once more keep Gyökeres in his pocket, next to that massive ding dong of his?

I don't want to tempt fate, so I'll say there's a hole in his pocket and that's why he keeps putting his hands down there.

4: Predict the result and the Boro scorers?

A nervy 1-0 win, early goal from Akpom to raise the roof (and the spirits) and then the minutes c  r  a  w  l past, Brighton-style.

5: If it goes to a penalty shoot out, who would be your chosen five?

Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the wee donkey and H.

6: Would you rather face Luton or Sunderland at Wembley, if we go there?

Luton. They're agricultural divers, we owe them one for their blatant cheating at Kenilworth Road, and I don't think a bigger pitch would suit them. Plus, can you imagine trudging down Wembley Way while 35,000 Sunderland fans serenade their newly promoted side?

Many boro fans are saying Cov fans think they are already at Wembley. The truth is, if before a ball was kicked. If Coventry fans were told they would be relegated this season. BUT we would have new owners & Wasps aka the Cuckoo's would go bust. Every cov fan on earth would have said that would be a good season for us. To be in the play offs after the start we had is unbelievable. And we think the footballing gods must be smiling on us. Who ever goes through let's hope they destroy Scumderland. That's if they make it. P.U.S.B.

Don't think we need to change much. If Chuba scores one or both of those chances, first leg would have been almost a perfect performance.

The difference on Wednesday will be we have to score, probably a couple. Bit more quality and speed with our passing to get behind the wing backs is needed.

And for all the talk of negating Gyokeres, they did well to take Archer out the game. He only needs one chance... We have to give him more to work with.

Hello again ! 😀

So we go again - no idea what to expect tbh

Based on what we have seen over last 180mins, its hard to see past this going late into the night and ET/pens - i dont think its any surprise both your forum and ours are asking who the 5 pen takers will be!

i think most level headed Cov fans (and manager!) have you down as favourites now, but tbh, thats when we tend to perform better. Teams that take the game to us tend to give us the opportunity to play our game better.

I think you could see a change of formation to 1 up top and bring in Allen to play as a #10, which is our preferred formation, Although this sounds more defensive it does actually help us press higher and stops us getting overrun in MF. but he may not be ready yet start!

I feel if you score first we could be in for a long night, but the longer it goes on i think our chances increase.

Head says 1.0 Boro, heart says our keeper will score the winning penalty!

Said on other thread but i'll say it again, winner of this tie goes up for me, i would love it be us (of course!) but i have enjoyed our games/fans and would be more than happy with you going up if it wasnt to be for us!

dont think any Cov or Boro fans are - Sunderland on the other hand are picking which parts of London they want to drink in 😂

I think it's been a great season for both clubs whatever the outcome on Wednesday.

Hoping it doesn't descend it to the weird social media grudge that Luton and Sheffield United fans seem to have against Middlesbrough now.

I have no issue with Coventry and would wish you all well in the final if the worst happens and you beat us.

I know a few Coventry fans who live up here and they're decent people.

I've noticed a few times that Coventry fans seem to have issue with Sunderland, what's that about?

I presume it's from the League One days and Sunderland thinking they're the biggest club in the world?

Questions:

1: Unchanged team selection?
I'd make just the 1 change - swap Mowatt for Barlaser as I feel he'd give us a bit more creativity.

2: Would you start Howson with 85 % if this was an FM game?

If it was a FM game, sure. However since this is real life and a person's fitness / wellbeing is at stake here, I think I'd still go with Barlaser. Might feel differently if we reach the final mind.

3: Will Paddy 'IRON FLAKES FOR BREAKFAST' McNair once more keep Gyökeres in his pocket, next to that massive ding dong of his?

I reckon a flash of that mighty dong will have Gyokeres spending most of the game in his own half, hiding behind the midfield! 😁 Seriously though, whatever Carrick has done to Paddy recently has turned him into a total beast. I can see Gyokeres throwing another strop and possibly getting booked as well.

4: Predict the result and the Boro scorers?

Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Coventry

Akpom

Forss (sub)

5: If it goes to a penalty shoot out, who would be your chosen five?

1. Akpom

2. Forss

3. Archer

4. McGree

5. McNair

6: Would you rather face Luton or Sunderland at Wembley, if we go there?

Tough one...Sunderland as I reckon they are more beatable than Luton. But in the interest of NE relations, I'd rather we beat Luton for the ultimate glory.

Its very much a them hating us scenario - and it goes back a very (very!) long way - 1977 in fact

We we're both in the prem going into the last game of the season with potential of going down along with Bristol who we were playing. Our game kicked off 15mins late due to crowd congestion issues, with 5mins of our game left, Jimmy Hill then put the Sunderland final score on the scoreboard, and they had lost, so all Cov and Bristol had to do was draw, we were 2.0 up at one stage but it had gone back to 2.2, and basically the last 5 mins we're effectively just played knocking it amongst ourselves as both teams had done enough to stay up.

We havent been forgiven since, all be it they have no issue with Bristol for some reason, and half of the Stone Island brigade who appear to try and make trouble (on both sides!) weren't even alive - but hey ho!
