BORO v Coventry - Semi Final 2nd Leg 0-1

This was my concern yesterday but I was not expressing myself very well. Sky pundits said it well.

ROBSON KANU

The second leg could be difficult at Middlesbrough because you would expect as the home team, they're going to want to be on the ball.

"But actually, that suits Coventry's game. Going into the second leg, away from home, they're not going to have the pressure to come out as a team and entertain their home fans. So from their perspective, there are a lot of plusses they can take."

MCANUFF

McAnuff agreed, adding: "I think it's perfectly set up for how Coventry want to play. Me and Hal played together at Reading one season and drew 0-0 against Cardiff City in the first leg and went away from home where there was no real pressure on us.

"If you sit in and are compact, which Coventry are, you can hit them on the counter, which is what we did and what Coventry can do. The game is there for Coventry to exploit with the way they like to play. There will certainly be so much expectation for Middlesbrough to deal with around the Riverside."

They make a good argument and it’s something along the lines I posted about not going gung-ho. Coventry are a counter attacking team which we have already witnessed over two games. It would be rather foolish of us to get carried away by the atmosphere, throw the kitchen sink at them early and run out of energy. But here is the thing, it’s a one off game under immense pressure and history and statistics go out the window. I believe it comes down to the mangers and how they approach and manage the players and expectations. Carrick has experienced and managers pressure well and why I think we will approach the game well prepared. The fans are integral and will add the energy players feed on.
The thing that can’t be planned or controlled, the WTF moments. It’s the pressure, adrenaline, nerves or tiredness when something unexpected happens, a wonder goal or a slip trip or tackle conceding or a sending off.

My opinion. Coventry will play much the same, park the bus and rough up our players and counter. We will probably knock the ball around back and forth, side to side probing for a opportunity. What I hope doesn’t happen, extra time or penalties.

I don't think many fans will be going to the Riverside on Wednesday expecting to be entertained, nor do I think that Carrick or the team would be pressured in to trying to be entertaining over effective.

The result is all that matters this time.

As long as it is not as bad as the Aston Villa game a few seasons ago where entertainment was made to be a foreign word

Simply boils down to this old cliche "May the best team win"

Let's not have debatable goals and incidents, penalty claims and such like but rather a proper football match between two evenly matched teams.

Hope fully we get a good referee, do we know who it is and is he a steady eddie with no controversy surrounding him?

Oh and our support has to drown out the travelling Coventry fans who I have to say did themselves proud last day of the campagn.

Going to be a glorious occassion of that I am sure

My thoughts too. Hope whoever wins earns it by being the better team, so the other fans can say, "Fair do's, can't complain, right result" rather than "how the !**$ did that happen?". Good luck to all involved, but mainly us 🙂

Yep. Sky are loving the Akpom v Gyokeres angle... But in my humble opinion, neither will be the best forward on the pitch.

Archer is pure class.

thought u was gonna say crooks

One thing we haven't considered is Mark Robins. He's done astonishingly well at Coventry, winning them two promotions and also overseeing two Wembley wins. We all believe Carrick's a master tactician, but he's up against someone who's actually got the track record to prove it.

Okay, the substitutions on Sunday didn't change the game in Coventry's favour - he's still limited by injuries - but he's a bloody good manager who's probably taken loads of notes from the last game in particular. He's taken the club to higher league positions every season since 2017. If there's a risk tomorrow, it's that Robins has a cunning plan to negate our attack, expanding the focus from Archer to Chuba and maybe Forss as well if he starts.

David Coote is the ref - no idea on the controversy angle, but I don't know of anything off the top of my head!

Reffed the league cup final between Utd & newcastle earlier this year.

He's refereed 15 of our games.

We've won 6 and drawn 6 of them, losing 3.

Unless I'm missing one, the last match he refereed for us was our 2-2 draw with QPR in 2019, the only controversial moment from that I remember was a wrong offside call in the early minutes.

That's quite sometime then since he last officiated a game then!

Is he a full time PL ref or a "part timer" these days?

Almost exclusively a Premier League referee since 2019, he's obviously been given this match because of it's importance.

Thanks for that info at least we can not prejudge the guy as I doubt a lot of us know much about him given the time since he last officiated a Boro match
