Referees performances

Ref for Millwall game is the rarely seen Geoff Eltringham, who apart from being in charge of the Stoke cup game, is not a common sight in these parts. Rumoured to be a staunch supporter of Les Chats Noir, I am confident that he will show complete impartiality and prove that he is better quality than the usual League 2 games he is allotted. In the only Championship game, he has officiated so far this year he showed five yellows, so par for the course in that respect but hopefully we do better than on his last visit ...

We start our next run of fixtures with a new face in Will Finnie, one of the younger lads on the list at 30 and making his way up through the leagues. The Plymouth game will be his 7th Championship match of the season and so far, he has shown 28 yellows and given two penalties, so sounds like he is not letting much go at the moment, which I suppose is to be expected from someone at that stage of his career. Boxing Day sees another up and comer in Anthony Backhouse who was in charge of the Leeds Cup game, which turned out OK though again he waved six yellows, so won't be letting much go. For Burnley on the 29th, we have Josh Smith who was pretty decent in the Oxford game last month, making allowances for the conditions and getting the offside decisions right . Finally our first ref for 2025 is Leigh Doughty, who did the away game with QPR in March and came across as a bit of a pain, showing six cards in the last 30 minutes after only one in the first 60, including three for dissent and two for time wasting (in the time added on).  He has also hit seven yellows in three of his ten Championship games this season, so maybe a bit whistle happy. Bit of a mixture but could have been worse, so lets hope they are full of festive cheer and give us a few presents 🙂

How the referee today, between himself, the linesman and the 4th official, didn't recognise they'd given the foul against the wrong man and as such incorrectly sent Rav off is beyond me. I mean, the game was heading their way one way or another it felt at the time, we didn't drop 2 points just because of that one decision but it was a really pathetic outcome that didn't need to happen, leading to us to lose him for a game in a way in which we can't even appeal.

As soon as they got to level they reverted back to being pretty rubbish tbh. If we still had 11 players on the pitch I'm reasonably confident we would have taken the lead again as we'd still have had azaz and doak on the pitch.

Our capitulation was woeful but i think that decision had more of a bearing on the game than people are giving it credit for.

I'm honestly not sure where that confidence comes from but there's very little I'm confident about right now when it comes to this team and getting results. Can't even expect them to manage a 3-0 half-time lead that they worked so hard and brilliantly for. The first and second half performances, regardless of the sending off, were complete mismatches. Like our best and our worst on show on the same matchday.

The mentality of these players at times is what I'd expect from a school team. They'll put teams to the sword because there is some unbelievable quality on that pitch going forward at times. But there was no signs of any fight, grit or even some basic defensive awareness at times on Thursday. They had a big chance in the first half that came from some similarly static defending on our part which arguably should have made it 3-1 and honestly, I wonder if we'd have actually been more likely to win if we took that blow in the first half and had chance to acknowledge and reflect on how poor it was and react as a unit at half time.

Barlaser and Borges were very poor prior to that, in fact Borges had gave up running and Barlaser looked half arsed. VDB knowing he was on a Yellow shouldn't have put himself in that position albeit if the former two had half the spirit and determination that ELL showed later on in getting back and defending it wouldn't have been an issue.

VDB is a young lad and an older and wiser player wouldn't have risked it, similar in a way to Hackney's immature sending off against Coventry when he was reckless and headless (how the heck Carrick makes him Captain absolutely loses me on so many levels) and in doing so cost us the match.

Those two incidents apart there are now far too many things happening collectively that sees us throwing points away. I see the Gazette have now sensed blood and jumped on the bandwagon:

Vdb didn't do anything though. Are you advocating for players on yellow cards to not compete for the ball? Because that's all he was doing, and fairly. Even if he had caught him he still needs to make the tackle or the player has a chance to get away. Vdb is entirely blameless in that incident imo.

To me in real time he ran across and deliberately blocked him off, it was intentional and not an unfortunate accident. Granted he didn't kick him or leave a trailing leg but he knew what he was doing, as soon as I saw it I thought that's it he's off so I can't berate the Ref for seeing what I saw.
