Huddersfield v Middlesbrough
Tuesday 8 August - 19:00 - John Smith's Stadium

The Form:
Welcome to the first, but hopefully not last, OldManGravz matchday thread of the season. I wasn't expecting it to come around so fast to be honest, but a disjointed showing against Millwall at home continued our horrible record of beginning the season with less than the maximum points. Still missing starting XI players in a number of positions, due to both injury and the transfer window still being open, Boro struggled to find a cutting edge in the final third, despite showing glimpses of some nice passing movements. The glimmer of hope has died from some fan's eyes despite there still being 45 games to play, so a good result in the cup will hopefully bring back some of the excitement for the season ahead.

Tuesday's opponents also began the season with a loss, returning from a ten hour round trip to newly promoted Plymouth Argyle empty handed after suffering a 3-1 defeat. Huddersfield skipper, Michal Helik, grabbed the only goal for Huddersfield in the 6th minute of injury time in the first half (gotta love that new system!), making him the clubs current top scorer. Huddersfield are, of course, managed by former Boro manager Colin Neil Warnock, and put four past us in April as they managed to survive relegation from the Championship.

The Line Up:
I feel we may experiment with the line up in this match and we may see a few of the other players we have signed this summer get their first minutes for the club. With Chuba, Coburn and Howson all making the bench on Saturday, might we see them getting a few minutes in this game, or is it still too soon? Given how short we are in some areas, and another important game coming against Coventry on Saturday (who themselves lost their first game of the season today) it will be interesting to see how we line up.

2. How many more signings/loans do you expect to see?
3. Will Akpom sign a new deal?
4. How far will we go in the cup
5. Will Warnock come back to haunt us again? What do you think the result will be?

For me, I wouldn't make wholesale changes, I think we need to get a bit of a performance to get us going. I wouldn't risk the unfit/not fully fit players personally.

Questions:

1. Where do you see us finishing this season?

5th

2. How many more signings/loans do you expect to see?

3-4

3. Will Akpom sign a new deal?

No

4. How far will we go in the cup

This round

5. Will Warnock come back to haunt us again? What do you think the result will be?

2-1 Udders. Think Warnock will do a job on us, it's just so Warnock.

I think we'll see largely the same team. Carrick said the team would be different but wouldn't be a completely changed team and I think given it's Championship opposition and how poor we were in the final third yesterday, we should be putting whatever we think our strongest, fittest side is out and giving them more chances to click.

It's hard to say exactly what that is (I'm still trying to work out why we would put Akpom on the bench but not bring him on when we need a goal) but if we were to say that every player in the squad from Saturday is fit to play then my team would be:

Dieng

McNair Fry Lenihan McGree

Howson Hackney

Forss Akpom Silvera

Crooks

I don't really think we'll see Akpom start, given what happened yesterday I'm not convinced he plays at all whether he's in the squad or not. But if he's fit then he should play some part. I'm not sure if Carrick is willing to go with the McGree experiment from the start but again, if we think it's better than playing Coulson then we should just go with it and try and make it work.

I'm not overly concerned about the Cup it's a futile exercise nowadays as it will be won by one of City, United, Arsenal or Liverpool with maybe the Saudi's gannin along the Scotswood Road en route to Wembley to make a surprise appearance in the final.

I reckon Warnock will have watched Saturday's game and will dissect us with pleasure. Exploiting toothless frailties that were all too clear to see against Millwall, letting us pass the ball ad nauseum and perhaps even starting with a 40 yard lob from Kick Off if Dieng plays. That said the Terriers long trip to Plymouth on Saturday wasn't exactly an uplifting experience either so we have two sides low on confidence and licking their wounds, both of whom will not want two consecutive losses to start the season with.

I would hope to see Crooks nowhere near the Chuba role ever again (Rogers instead), Agyemang given an opportunity, Forss or Coburn up top, Silvera and Jones on the wings. I'm not convinced that Payero is part of any plans so wouldn't be surprised if he isn't given a run out but there again he couldn't do any worse than Barlaser so who knows. With Coulson's injury record I'd rest him and give one of the young uns a chance along with RVB in place of Fry who will be wrapped in Cotton Wool hopefully.

1. Where do you see us finishing this season?

9th

2. How many more signings/loans do you expect to see?

I'd want 5 but will have to settle for 3 probably

3. Will Akpom sign a new deal?

He was just about to but an offer came in that we couldn't match so reluctantly he left

4. How far will we go in the cup

Just off the M62, this side of the Pennines

5. Will Warnock come back to haunt us again? What do you think the result will be?

Yup and 2-0

I really hope we don't play the reserves. It accomplishes nothing. Last season was a case in point. If you put out 11 reserve players then they all look awful because they've never played together. We lose the match and everyone goes home thinking the reserves are useless. Plus, right now, we haven't won in 6 games and scored just two goals in that time. We really need to get some momentum. So I would largely stick with the team that ended the match.

That said, I would bring in van den Berg for Fry because I get the impression struggles with injuries. I would give McGree at left back another try. It's all the rage to have full-backs who play as midfielders. Barlaser has yet to make a case for himself but he needs a little faith. There is an argument for Payero. We have an actual striker who can play the striker role so put Forss up front and give Rogers the chance to make a case for himself at #10. Jones needs a run to see how well he has recovered. Finally, it's traditional for the back-up keeper to play in cup matches but we need to keep consistency in playing out from the back so Dieng should stay.

This is potentially an exciting team. Pace, youth, creativity, comfortable on the ball. I would be happier with Howson in midfield for his experience but, to quote the guru, it is what it is.

Youngsters like Agyemang and Nkrumah maybe make the bench with a chance for some game time. would also like to see Gilbert get a good run out if possible.

Glover

McNair - Lenihan - Van den Berg - McGree

Payero Hackney

Jones Akpom Silvera

Coburn

That's assuming we're not selling Payero and that Coburn and Akpom are actually at a level to be playing.

Swap Payero for Howson, Akpom for Rogers and Coburn for Forss if not.

I'd like us to go full strength to be honest, but we've got so many players that need minutes.

Warnock indicated on interview that he see's this game as a chance for his fringe players and what will be will be and that he does not expect to get far in the competition.

Any way going to Watch England V Nigeria now with England announcing a full recovery for one of their star palyers
