WBA V Boro 4-2 (Lath, Forss (pen) )

Featured Replies

Feel I should probably start with a little fact-checking before answering any questions, so here we go...my first stat attack of the season:

Overall:    W42    D24    L35

Home:       W29    D13    L8

Away:        W13   D11    L27

Last 10 Away:    W4    D2    L4

(going back to 30th November 2002)

Historically things don't look too good for Boro, but our recent record against the Baggies isn't too shabby at all. Although our most recent visit to the Hawthorns ended in a 2-0 defeat, we did win there twice in February and December of 2019...3-2 and 2-0 respectively.

As Marvin pointed out, WBA's start to the season has been pretty average and while Boro's has been worse, we did show marked signs of improvement in our draw against Huddersfield. I feel if Carrick can build on that and extract a bit more from the lads, in terms of technique and performance, there is definitely reason for optimism.

Are we going to win a league game yet?

This could be the one, but a share of the points wouldn't be the worst result. If we are going to have more new faces to bed in, we shouldn't expect a fully-functioning team just yet.

Will we have three new players in time?

Not in time to see any action in this game, but hopefully the next one.

Who is your favourite player to represent both the Mighty Boro and the Baggies?

Probably have to go with Bryan Robson.

How many will we actually win by?

It'll be a close one I feel. Another draw is quite likely, but if we do manage a win it'll be just by the odd goal. My prediction: WBA 1 - 2 Middlesbrough

  • I was at the game today - here’s my take: Our situation is worrying, but there are positives to take. I think the majority of the personnel we have at the club is good enough. We have lots of you

  • I don't agree with everything you've said but I think a lot of it is right on the money. I think Carrick will have a couple of things he sticks to, a back 4 for example seems to be very much something

  • Kinda numb to it all now, dont even get angry or upset because like everyone else has pointed out its the same pattern repeating itself every single season.   Squad is never ready and manage

One of these beauties, as Maddo says, from Silvera tomorrow please 👌

I love Ayala and Coulson's synchronised little leaps and fist pumps (at 23 seconds).

I'm looking for two seats to get to WBA tomorrow if possible. Cheers lads

On the bus or a train? Or maybe in a car? 🙂 🙂 🙂

A draw would be a decent result here. Really need to follow it up with a win v QPR.

A number of players who played for both team

David Mills: Played for the Boro in two separate spells, 1st spell between 1968-1979, playing 296 games & scoring 76 goals, he scored the only goal at Luton in 1974 to clinch the Boro the 2nd Championship, he asked for a transfer in 76 & the club put a £200k transfer fee on him, there were no takers, he eventually moved to WBA in 79, Ron Atkinson paying an English transfer fee of £500k & between 1979 -82 he played 59 games scoring 6 goals for West Brom. The late, great Willie Maddren re-signed DM for the Boro for season 1984-85 where he played 32 games, scoring 14 goals.

Bryan Robson: Robbo played 198 games for West Brom scoring 40 goals, he then signed for Man United where he stayed until 1994 when the chance to become player manager at the Boro was too good an opportunity for him & signed for the Boro between 1995 -2001, playing 28 games & scoring one goal, a thunder bolt at the east end seats of AP against Port Vale. BR brought something to the club that, as a long serving fan, I thought I would never see following my club, playing in a major cup final at Wembley, whatever the results he gave us all dreams

Tony Mowbray: Mogga played 348 games between1982-1991 for Boro scoring 25 goals, September 1982 Willie Maddren gave Mowbray his debut away to Newcastle, his role was to man mark Kevin Keegan, it worked, KK didn't score & we come away with a 1-1 draw. Mowbary left the Boro for Celtic & once his playing career was over managed a few team, WBA being one of them, he returned to the Boro as manager between 2010 -2013

James Morrison: Played 66 games for the Boro between 2004-07 scoring 3 goals, his claim to fame, on the 30 September 2004 in a UEFA Cup tie, away at Banik Ostrava & making his EUFA cup debut, he scored the Boro's 1st ever away goal in our UEFA cup campaign. Morrison started for Middlesbrough in the 2006 UEFA Cup Final against Sevilla. In 2007 he left the Boro for WBA for £1.5M & to date played 254 games, scoring 28 goals, he got sent off in an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Manchester United for a kick out at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jonathan Greening: Played 99 games for the Boro, between 2001-2004 scoring 4 goals, he signed for the Boro along with a united teammate of his, Mark Wilson, for a combined fee of £3M, he was voted Club player of the Year for 2002–03 and also selected for the full England squad (though he didn't play). JG signed for WBA & between 2004-2010 played 196 games, scoring 7 goals.

Chris Brunt: at the Boro between 2002-2004  never got any game time, after a few seasons at Sheff Weds he was transferred to WBA in 2007, where he is still playing, CB has played 286 games, scoring 39 goals.

Alan Miller - RIP, our 42nd different goalkeeper played 62 times for the Boro between 1994 & 1997, Alan had 3 separate spells at WBA, a loan spell before joining the Boro & while at the Boro he went to WBA on loan before signing permanently in 1997, playing a total of 108 games

Jordan Hugill not a good loan signing for me - played 37 games for us on loan in 2018-19, 20 gams for West Brom in 2021-22 season

Bit of stats between both teams in these fixtures over the years

A big goalscoring CF the 1st & probably, only time a Boro player has made 2 debuts against the same team.

An end of a legend.

Our record signings  debuts

And one of the best ever long range wonder goals

2nd January 1915 -  Boro Scottish CF Andrew Nesbit Wilson made his debut in a 1-0 away loss at WBA, he played a full season before he enlisted to join the army for the 1st world, early 1918 he was injured in Arras when shell fragment shattered his left hand & was invalided home & allowed to play in Scotland, during his time there he continued to score goals & as the Boro still held his registration he was recalled back to Teesside when on the 29th August 1921 he made his "second" Boro debut at WBA in a 0-0 draw

3rd September 1977 - Record signing Billy Ashcroft made his non scoring debut in a 2-1 defeat, also making his scoring debut that day was Cyril Regis
One of the best defenders ever to pull on a Boro shirt & a legend of Charltons Champions, Willie Maddren, played his final Boro 1st team game
Another one from Charltons Champions team, Peter Brine who played his final away game at the hawthorns, coming off injured early in the 2nd half, he played one more game the following week, home game & sadly had to retire through persistent knee injury

16th March 1974 West Brom 0 Boro 4 -  5th top West Brom that day

29th December 2019 West Brom 0 Boro 2 - Ashley Fletcher scored a wonder goal, with TV pundit Ian Holloway described Ashley Fletcher's wonderstrike at West Brom as, "a goal he could watch all day & all night'!

14th December 1901 - The 1st fixture between these two team in the west midlands, with Boro losing 2-0

Boro who have won 2 & drew one of our last 4 visits to Saturdays opponent

I can see us getting our first win today (possibly because I'm a hopeless optimist). 1-0 with Silvera putting his wrongs right and slotting it away.

Hope you are right John, do not want a sulky son and grandson on the way home from the game!
