It's time to rise and shine again after that last game v Stoke, a game where nothing went the way we maybe wanted it to .. But we are still in decent form and this game should be won and used as a self esteem booster for the team and some of the fringe players for sure.

I don't know sh1t about Exeter and this is the Mickey Mouse cup, so what is there to say? Exeter haven't won a game since they knocked Luton out of this competition back in September and their results are shocking, so we should win this comfortable on paper .. but the game is played on grass, so you never know.

If any of the stats nerds can contribute anything fance, please feel free to do so and I'll make a "proper" MDT  if/when we win this one.

Q's

1. Predict the result and the goal scorers?
2. Your chosen 11?
3. Is the number of injured players worrying you?
4. Are you travelling to this game?
5. Can I take back the MDT record?

I think this will be a routine win with half the starting 11 changed.

1. Predict the result and the goal scorers?

3-0 Boro: Silvera, Coburn, Rogers.

2. Your chosen 11?

Glover, Dijksteel, McNair, Lenihan, Bangura, Barlaser, Hackney, Jones, Rogers, Silvera, Coburn

I think you play Coburn and hope he gets a goal to get his confidence going.

3. Is the number of injured players worrying you?

Yeah a little bit. Maybe less the number and more the importance of the players out. And there's a bit of a lack of clarity on timelines, minus the lads who will be out long term.

4. Are you travelling to this game?

No, 7000km is a hair too far for me to commit

5. Can I take back the MDT record?

Not with Leicester, Preston, Leeds, Hull all in our sights.

I expect to see this team, I'd prefer Jones in goal over Glover and a young CM from the U21s in midfield but that's not going to happen.1698585505816.thumb.png.8d613b2f4385020cff72c2e535d70c25.pngExeter is a city in Devon, that's about all I know. I once went to a Funeral For a Friend gig in Exeter.

They'll make it difficult for us but I think we'll get through to the Quarter Final, possibly after extra time.

I would go with:

Glover

Dijk VDB Paddy Bangura

Hackney Barlaser

Silveria Rogers Gilbert

Lath

* Would love to start Clarke but think its best to be cautious but if we are comfortable then would love him to get on for final 20 minutes.

** Gilbert I started over Jones as latter needs a rest and Gilbert needs a chance to show what he can do.

Hopefully we win 3-1 and Lath scores a hat trick

If we start with the same levels of nervousness and insecurity as we did in response to Stoke pressing us then it could be an uncomfortable and difficult evening.

As much as on Paper we should run out easy winners the confidence sapping of Saturday afternoon combined with too much tinkering could backfire on us. Exeter of course do not possess the quality of the Stoke squad but a few early aggressive challenges from the Grecians, snapping and closing us down might rattle us, more so if we have a back line of individuals not used to playing together with a rusty Keeper behind them.

I think Carrick needs to ensure he gets the job done and then hopefully later in the game he can start "resting" players.

  • Downsouth changed the title to Exeter v Boro (4th Round EFL Cup)

I think he'll freshen up the team but not necessarily play the reserves.  Something to realise is how little football some of our new players have played. Greenwood had never previously played two whole games in a row so I suspect his body is in a state of shock. Likewise, Engel may find the run of games at this level catching up with him. Latte Lath has probably earned a run out. Fry tends to be prone to injury if he is overplayed and it seems an unnecessary risk to start Clarke, so it's probably looking something like.

Glover

Dijksteel - RVDB - McNair - Bangura

Barlaser - Hackney

Jones - Crooks - Rogers

Latte Lath

With so many senior players missing, I see Carrick relying heavily on Crooks, Hackney and McNair. Right now, even Jones feels like a bit of a senior player. If we get comfortably ahead, I can see Gilbert and Silvera getting a decent run out. The left side has never played together so hopefully the old right side triangle of Dijksteel, Crooks and Jones can get us through it.

Glover

Dijksteel Van den Berg Clarke Bangura

Barlaser Hackney

Gilbert Rogers Silvera

Latte Lath

Ring the changes, hope it's still enough to beat a bottom half League One side.

Even though I think it's risky, with a game on Saturday and Plymouth having lots of extra rest, I'd not be unhappy if we went as strong as possible either.

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/23886606.michael-carrick-confident-josh-coburn-will-score-middlesbrough/  Michael Carrick confident Josh Coburn will score for Middlesbrough, “Forwards obviously like scoring goals, but Josh is doing a lot of good work for the team,” said Carrick, whose side make a swift return to action when they head to League One Exeter City in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Tuesday night. “I’m sure the goals will come for him at some stage, whether it’s this week, next week or whenever." It remains to be seen whether Coburn starts against Exeter, with Latte Lath having started Boro’s last two League Cup matches against Bolton Wanderers and Bradford City. Carrick made a number of changes in both of those games, and will be tempted to do the same things at St James’ Park given that Boro are in the midst of a run of five matches in the space of 14 days. However, the Boro boss will also be mindful that Tuesday’s game against an Exeter side that are winless in their last seven games in all competitions offers a great opportunity to make the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. “We’ll approach Tuesday as a really important game,” said Carrick. “Luton went there and got beat, so we know it’s not an easy game by any means. We know we need to be at the top of our game and play extremely well to get the result we want.”

Hopefully we can make Exeter... exit... err the cup...

Lots of injuries, but I imagine we'd have made changes anyway.

1. Predict the result and the goal scorers?

3-0 Boro. Latte Lath hatty.

2. Your chosen 11.

not a clue

3. Is the number of injured players worrying you?

A bit. Sounds like most will be out until at least the international break as well.

4. Are you travelling to this game?

I'm going down south, but just for work, no football 😞

5. Can I take back the MDT record?

No.
