It's also worth considering that some of the money was spent well but a lot hasn't been. From the terrible position we were in, absolutely yes. No club without parachute payments like us could lose key loan players of Archer, Ramsey, Giles and Steffen, and then have to sell Akpom to raise funds to rebuild with, and then be reasonably expected to be able to be able to compete at the same level in the next season, or even the season after. Them players created a massive bubble that was always going to burst at the end of the 2022/23 season, and it was always going to be a difficult rebuild with the amount of signings we had to make to fill the squad spaces and not a great deal of money to spend. We've gradually rebuilt the quality and increased the retained value in our squad with signing Berg, Morris, Azaz, Lath and Dieng on permanent deals, who are at the minimum top end Championship quality players. I think our team strength is similar to the team we had in the 2022/23 season now so if anything it's ahead of where I expected it to be at this stage - but vitally we own most of our key players. I'm more than happy with what Scott has done in the transfer market in that time. There's been mistakes, yes undoubtedly - most notably the problematic LB position - but from where we were two years ago I think we've made huge strides forward as a football club; with us now successfully implementing a transfer model that's showing signs of putting us in a position similar to Brentford when they were in the Championship. Even despite our under-achievements this season we're still sat 5th. The retained value aspect of owning our key players can't be under-estimated as it's vital to us successfully being able to raise significant funds each season to reinvest in new players to develop - especially with our accounts being released yesterday showing how reliant we are on that. The single biggest factor in us not taking as many steps forward this season as possible is Carrick. This squad is more than capable of competing for the top two spots and he hasn't progressed as a coach in the past two years, as he still doesn't have the tactical flexibility to plug the gaps that we leave without Morris and down the left-flank. It's avoidable things that a better tactician would solve. Also, the culture hasn't been tweaked towards more focus on results now that the squad is in a stronger position. If we come up against an equivalent solid and organised Coventry from 2022/23 in the play-offs this season then I think Carrick will be caught short yet again. We've grown off the pitch, but he hasn't grown tactically or culturally with us. If he does leave then I suspect Scott will want a culture that's far more focused on winning promotion now that the squad quality has been built up to be in a position to achieve that.
p_mards 1,653 8.4k
Burnley have Aaron Ramsey and Manuel Benson due back from injury very soon so if they sign Morgan Whittaker then I wouldn't be surprised to see us make a move for one of them.
