I was shocked we lost £19m last season.

The best way to lose a lot of money in the Championship is to fund a promotion push but end up 7th each season. It pushes up your wage bill from bonuses but brings in no extra income. We have an expensive stadium, expensive player wages, expensive academy. On average, without taking player transfers into account, the club loses around £18m a year.

Since Scott started we seem to have a policy that player transfer profits can be reinvested in loan fees and purchases while Gibson loans the club enough every year to cover all the rest of its losses. Looking at it, summer 22/23 appears to be when Gibson drew a line and started a new financial system. Since then we have spent (per Transfermarkt) €43m on transfers and received €53m. When you take off the sell-on fee for Rogers and add in loan fees, that means since then we probably have a small surplus of €2m in the kitty for this winter. We have now sold Jones and will presumably sell ELL which gives us plenty to spend but I suspect that like Rogers and Crooks, most of it will be saved for the summer.

In some ways it's odd that we're all so negative about this season. Looking at our record since relegation, this is our position after matchday 26.

24/25 5th 41pts
23/24 12th 36pts
22/23 7th 39pts
21/22 9th 39pts
20/21 7th 39pts
19/20 16th 33pts
18/19 5th 43pts
17/18 8th 41pts

Basically, we're doing as well or better as anytime except Pulis's only full season at this time of the season. Unfortunately, however, we're on track to finish in our usual place: 6th-8th. Another season of finishing 7th is going to cost Gibson another £18m.

Limping out of the FA Cup is also financially stupid. Some games can bring decent income. Didn't a single game at Old Trafford bring in 1 mil. a few years ago? Even Morecambe made something like 400k from their visit to Chelsea.

Yeah and we also didn't get promoted any of those times either. We're stagnant

Stagnant is strong, we tend to be in contention most seasons. I get it's frustrating we don't comfortably mount a promotion tilt every season but we are in a better position than most and we are less feast or famine than we were some years in the championship

I'm not trying to wind people up but I bet they are looking at Sunderland and their investment in purely young players. It's starting to pay off and they seem to be able to be consistent in their line ups with fewer injuries.

In hindsight, when they forced Mowbray to play youngsters and refused to pay for experienced players, it worked. They lost Mowbray on the back of it but even though they screwed up the appointment they kept their nerve. Means they have a lot of players under 23 with a lot of Championship experience. This season, they are clearly minded to add more experience. If they spend big on a decent striker, they are in a good place to make a fight of it in the play-offs. They'll be hoping they end up 4th and Leeds do their usual falling apart trick to leave a final against someone like Blackburn.

We have really struggled to bring  in our own youngsters and we tend to buy players aged 21+ I think Rav is the only player we've bought as a teenager who has made it into the first team. You can't overstate how badly we have been hit by injuries but we seem to be dealing with it by buying or loaning equivalents rather than turning to the academy.

They've clearly invested on loans too, Isidor and the new lad can't have been cheap

I think losing Lath will be a massive blow to our confidence of promotion, the fee is alright but with our current form losing our main striker feels rough

Only striker as things stand. No idea when Conway is back.

All of that is easy to say in hindsight but they finished 16th last season only 6pts off the drop. It’s a risky game to play and we all saw what happened against Stoke in the league cup earlier in the season when we made the mistake of playing too many of the kids. I’m not sure our fanbase would tolerate the short-term pain for potential longer-term gain.

Just feels if we dont bring an established goalscorer to replace him the squad will wonder where is the ambition? Much like the fans. What message does it send to players Vdb and Morris on our future aspirations, theyll wonder if they are wasting their time. Even doak will wonder what the point of sticking around is like we will be trying to get in his head to tell Liverpool. Im concerned and would love to be proven wrong

Suppose the counter argument is that it also shows potential signings that we won’t stand in the way of them making the next step in their career. For as long as we’re in this league, we’re always going to be a stepping stone club. Very few players grow up with ambitions of playing in the championship long-term.
