Dan1234 1,253 3.2k
Wonder if Ben Bereton could be an option? He might be the one Southampton are willing to let go. Would work great for us coming in off the left.

Giles spent 6 months struggling in PL and then a further 12 months struggling in Championship before arriving here. Archer has spent 2yrs struggling in PL. The gap between PL and championship is so ridiculous there is no suggestion he would struggle back in championship. To give you an example of the gulf. Josh Brownhill and Josh Cullen were outstanding when Burnley went up with Kompany. Completely bypassed in PL but back in championship were brilliant again. Dan James, Hamer and Summerville are further examples of players who look outstanding at this level and not even ordinary in PL I think Archer will hit 15+ goals in championship but I dont think it will be here as Saints will want £15m they paid for him. But if Saints are wise they keep him and Armstrong and they are pretty much guaranteed 40 goals next season. Bottom line then is he hasn't covered himself in any glory. He may be a flat track bully, come back down to the Championship and be able to perform but there is as much likelihood that being in a club getting mullered every week will like Giles destroy his confidence, we don't know, but I imagine in any case he wouldn't come cheap. The most obvious outcome if Southampton think like yourself that he will be born again then why would they consider selling to a rival, unless of course we were willing to pay over the odds which isn't what we do anymore. Sheffield United were on the hook for £18m for him and then done the dodgy Villa deal and Southampton are supposedly now into £15m for the lad who has scored just two goals in 35 games (both came in one game against Cardiff in the League Cup). I can't see how we could get him for less than the £15m the Saints forked out for their own PSR sake and I can't see us splashing that amount on any Player anyway, let alone one with a question mark over him. The problem for Archer is that he has been valued far higher than his ability apart from that cameo half season with Boro. For what it's worth I think in the right set up he maybe could recover his mojo but we all thought the same about Giles and it appears that not only those two but Carrick himself now needs to rekindle his mojo. Hammy legend 1,259 1.4k
Archer has played for 2 really bad Premier League sides which hasn't done him any favours. I think he will score goals in the Championship but, as you say, think Southampton would want £10 million plus so that's a no go I think.
mj south 733 1.7k
Archer and Conway as our 2 strikers would be as good as any pair in the Championship but it’s whether it’s a luxury we can afford when there’s still 4 other priority positions to fill aswell

Even if we had to push things out a bit for a Strelec say up to £7M (or even £8M with add on's) it would be in the belief that we could double his value. With Archer even with a good season it's unlikely we would double our money especially considering his realistic cost which is probably 3 really good players at this level. LinoJo3 5,748 13.5k
One thing I remember about archer was he found it pretty easy to have a quiet game, like if the team Wernt on form or we came up against a stubborn defence he would be ineffective. It was a standout thing for me in the play off home game aswell, archer was nowhere to be seen. Thats what made Lath better imo, much more influential.

Given a straight choice between the two I'd take ELL before him, despite his "unrest" or likely imminent departure he always looked to be putting an effort in and doing his best. I don't think that Archer wasn't trying and was a great asset at the time but he did seem much more reliant on others around him playing well and supporting whereas ELL seemed determined to do it all by himself if needs be.
edinboro 1,455 2.2k
Good discussion on Echo Podcast - which player leaving out of Rav, Hackney or Azaz would be least disruptive. They settled on Rav due to the defence needing a rebuild anyway. Mention of price for Hackney being more than Bellingham from the Mackems. So upwards of £25m. Also if he stars at the u21s he could go for big, big money. Same goes for Rav I guess. I wonder if the club decide, assuming we get £20m from Rogers leaving Villa, to gamble on keeping them all. Could we get what we need for £30m-£40m?
Snowblind 2,366 7.2k
Reports down here are that Villa are hell bent on selling just about anybody else to keep Rogers for next season. I don't think we should be banking on that money coming through.
ManBearPig 2,303 4.2k
I think we won’t have a problem in selling them for good money, but I just worry we won’t spend the money wisely. Are we buying players to fit Carricks system or are we buying players who Carrick will work with for a different system more in line with how the club want to make us play? Just feel we’re going to sign a Whittaker for example who on paper looks good, but then we put him in a bust system and they flop

The other side of the coin is if rogers starts getting big league offers from champions league teams is he just gonna let them pass by? We’ve seen ourselves (going off reports) if an opportunity he wants presents itself he’s not scared to push for it.

Salech a cheaper option at £4m , or a dark horse from Europe like Filip Vecheta Mojmir Chytil Youssef El Kachati , Ben Kallman , Maxi Silvera Rayan Philippe , Aussie league Patryk Klimala or Japan league Marcelo Ryan and Leo Ceara who IS prolific . We will go for Strelec I think or someone like that, we need that ‘light house’ type more than an archer type. Probably get a cheaper version of archer/Lath to rotate with Conway.
