Let teams over-pay and use all their budget on ready-made players. Done that plenty ourselves in the past and found it definitely does not guarantee success.

We’ve shown we can find gems elsewhere, need to keep that going though for it to work long term.

Similar to us pushing the boat out in January and signing Whittaker. At the time I couldn't believe that we'd managed to pull off that deal and felt it was a real coup for us. But we've yet to reap the rewards of this "ready-made" player. It's always a gamble spending big at this level.

I think the biggest acceleration for a young player is to play 30 plus games in a senior team. It's not about the shouting at them and making them man kind of thing, it is the experience that comes from the daily grind and facing players who know what it takes to win games. Hackney's Scunthorpe loan looks like a failure at first glance because they got relegated and he got a hefty ban for spitting but the key thing is that he went there and played a whole season in league 2 and held his own.

For whatever reason, we've really struggled with loans for our academy players. Coburn, Brynn, Hemmings and Hackney have had successful loans and I suspect it's not a coincidence that those are the players who are going to have good careers at a high level. We have had players like Conteh who had a mostly successful loan but had no path to the first team squad but we keep ending up with U21 players in their final season as U21s with virtually no senior experience. McCabe and McCormick needed to either go on loan last season or play a decent number of minutes (say 300-500) in the first team. As it was, they did neither and now we're stuck needing players from the academy but unsure whether we have anyone. Personally, although it went badly wrong at Doncaster, I would do what Edwards did and try to get them in the team enough times to build them up. Only thing I would say is that McCormick is clearly a LCB not a wingback and McCabe will need to play alongside Morris rather than Kante because the two of them together are far too inexperienced in the Championship. (Kante charged around and got stuck in but has a lot to learn about anchoring a midfield.)

Absolutely spot on and exactly what I was trying to say.  Just looked at McCabe stats.  Three league starts 23/24.  None last year.  Three League Cup starts over this and previous two seasons.  How on earth is that helping his development.  A full season away in the real world of football is the way forward.
