               Middlesbrough v Hull City

          Wednesday 13th December 2023

                       Riverside Stadium

                         Kick off 8pm

(Sorry DS!)

Hello everyone – me again!

Boro’s broken brigade limp on to their next fixture, a Wednesday evening clash with Hull City. The Hull fans are sure to bring the noise for this one and definitely won’t engage in any activities that could be considered “cringe”

As for Boro, well, what can you say at the moment? It seemed for a while that the lads were coping with the missing bodies, but it seems the difficult run of fixtures has overstretched the squad at this point. Whilst there’s no argument that Ipswich were the better team on Saturday and have had an excellent season, it was clear that Boro were not at their best. Sloppy passing and indifferent attacking manoeuvres were in abundance, as the away side strolled to a comfortable win. Hopefully the return of Isaiah Jones and Big Djik from suspension should help to provide a bit more attacking zest!

Hull

Hull currently occupy 8th position in the table. They sit 3 points ahead of Boro on 30 points. Under boss Liam Rosenior they’ve established themselves as one of the most pass-happy teams in the division, quite a departure from Hull teams of the past.

Here’s some of the key data on Hull that I’ve shamelessly stolen form various sources. Viva la Plagiarism!

And now some individual player data. Jayden Philogene the obvious standout here and one to watch on Wednesday night. (Edit - or not, turns out he's injured! Wahey!)

And finally, a table comparing playstyles stolen from that bloke whose name I can't remember on twitter. It seems like their style of play is similar to our own:

Some pre match questions:

Would you put Izzy and big Anf' straight back in?

What other changes would you like to see?

How many points do you see us picking up between now and New Years Day?

Would you put Izzy and big Anf' straight back in?

We have to put Izzy in because Crooks can't play without him, as I stated on the Ipswich thread. Not convinced by Dijksteel - I'd rather play VDB out of position with Fry and Clarke in the centre. However, if there are any unattached RBs floating around, I'd love to bring one in now and give us extra strength for the next six games, rather than waiting and hoping for a January signing.

What other changes would you like to see?

What other changes can we make? Unless someone surprises us by returning from injury, I think the rest of the team picks itself.

How many points do you see us picking up between now and New Years Day?

On paper, our next five fixtures look relatively straightforward. If we can't take at least seven points from Hull, Swansea, West Brom, Rotherham and Huddersfield, we've got no chance of the play-offs. I reckon we'll win two, lose two and draw one, but given the fact we comfortably beat Leicester yet didn't lay a glove on Ipswich, your guess is as good as mine about which Boro turn up for each game.

Yes. Jones is a no brainer. Big Anf is only a yes because I worry about overloading Clarke, so I'd be resting him and having Dael/Rav at CB. If Clarke had a few more games under his belt, Anf would be on the bench until he's proven he can be trusted.

What other changes would you like to see?

You could toss a coin between Rogers and Greenwood to drop out, both had poor games (mind you a lot did) on Saturday. I'd be tempted to give Silvera a run out on the left. Silvera-Crooks-Jones.

With the injury list, there's not a lot of other options to shake it up, especially if Coburn is struggling for fitness.

How many points do you see us picking up between now and New Years Day?

7. Nothing from this game, win against Swansea, loss to WBA, beat Rotherham and draw with Udders.

Jones is a no brainer for me, he was missed big time on saturday, his defensive duties are a big part of his game, I agree with the previous poster regarding Clarke playing too many games after been out so long

I would rest him for Hull, bring in Dijksteel, build up Clarkes match fitness slowly, hes got a big part to play

What other changes would you like to see? Silvera for Greenwood, or Rogers

How many points do you see us picking up between now and New Years Day?

Anyones guess, Untypical Boro could get 15 points, you can never tell, never back em, never back against em, as my dad often said

you lost me when saying you'd rather play with Fry. He's going backwards quickly, either that or i've took the rose tinted glasses off and i'm seeing him for what he is.

If it means we don't have to play the card-happy Dijksteel at RB, I'll gladly accept Fry at CB. Though I agree he's not our first choice CB any more.

That'd be my team for Hull. Rather not have to push Clarke too hard after such a lengthy absence and despite his flaws I think Dijksteel and Jones' interplay alone justifies his selection. VDB does a decent job when asked to fill the RB gap but struggles to offer anything of note going forwards in that role. Philogene down the left means Dijksteel's pace could be an asset.

With Hackney out the midfield picks itself, I do worry that Howson and Barlaser kind of do the same job and I'd like to see Hayden and Dan be given more opportunities to play together when our injury list allows for it.

Wasn't sure whether to go for Greenwood or Crooks behind Lath, both were poor against Ipswich. Wouldn't be averse to seeing either of them. With McGree and Forss out, Jones in the 3 attacking midfielders is a must pick for me. Lath up front over Coburn, I think he's given a decent account of himself in recent games in spite of some poor finishing.

Hard at the moment to figure out which Boro is going to turn up. A win here would be big with some easier looking fixtures ahead and the opportunity to bolster our striking and right back options in January. I hope we can make the playoffs but we need to find our consistency again in both performances and results.
