If it was a choice between winning the League Cup or promotion, I'd take the cup.

For me, its not even close. It is the Cup every time. I old enough to see us get promoted to the top division in 1974, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2015 plus from the third in 1987. Only one major trophy though.

Although he would never admit to it, I suspect that Carrick will use this match as a friendly in disguise with the aim to ease some of our long-term injured back into practice.

I reckon Crooks, Hackney and Latte Lath will get 30/60 minutes each. Azaz will possibly get 30 minutes. Greenwood will play the whole 90 as he is cup-tied in the EFL. He may also try out Crooks in a deeper midfield position.

I don't really expect to see any of the U21s get more than 5-10 minutes at the end. My theory.

Glover

RVDB

Fry

Clarke

Bangura

Howson -> 60 mins Crooks

Barlaser ->  60 mins Hackney

Jones -> 75 mins Engel (rejig to put Bangura on right)

Rogers -> 75 mins Azaz

Greenwood

Latte Lath -> 60 mins Coburn

I suspect that Villa will try and go all out to get in 2 or 3 nil ahead at half time so they can coast the rest of the game.

First 2 Boro games in the FAC – Amateur status

10th November 1883 - Round one - Our 1st ever FAC time when a Derbyshire mining side named Staveley travelled up to Teesside to play the mighty Boro at our Linthorpe road ground, Archie Pringle is credited with scoring Boro's 1st ever FAC goal, Staveley won the game 5-1, not saying the away team were a bit physical, but at the end of the game a few Boro players needed hospital treatment

6th December 1884 - Round two - Our 1st FAC win, beating Newark at Linthorpe road 4-1 with a brace from Archie Pringle, Borrie & Hardwick

Really not fussed by this game as nice as it would be to win. Rest players who need it, don't risk anyone and use it as a warm up for midweek. All eyes on Chelsea.

Out of interest, finish 6th or beat Chelsea over two legs. Which would you take (if only one)?

Interesting question. Probably going to sound like I'm contradicting some earlier posts, but if I were able to choose, I'd take beating Chelsea (don't think we can, but given the option I'd take it).

Seeing Boro in another cup final would be nice and for me, winning the play-offs is about as likely as winning any silverware this season.

Agree, if you could chose one then agree, Chelsea

As Rogers is suspended for Tuesday night he'll surely start tomorrow. We've got to approach the game with a careful eye on keeping our players fresh and getting minutes into the players who'll benefit from them. If we can get 20-30 minutes into Hackney, Crooks and Lath it would set them up well for Tuesday night. My main concern is that we're down to our last two CM's (Howson and Barlaser), last two CB's (Clarke & Fry) and last RB (Berg) - all of which have had a busy schedule so will be at risk of a muscle injury. It's not what we need given we're starting to get important players back available. Some less reliable alternatives appear to be Bilongo at CB, McCabe at CM, and Agyemang who can cover RB and CM.

It's looking like a low attendance going from the Boro tickets available. The North Stand in particular looks to have sold very low numbers. When we played Brighton in the FA Cup 3rd Round last season the attendance was 21,982. I'd guess that it's going to be much lower than that. This game falling just before our first-leg of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, as well as it being on TV, really won't help with the attendance.

Home league hat tricks v Aston Villa

Our 1st ever meeting in the FAC - 74 years to the exact day

Both teams played out a 2-2 draw with Bill Linacre & Peter McKennan scoring our goals, with a replay at Ayresome Park, agains following extra time the teams couldn't be separated so a 2nd replay was needed, which was on neutral ground, the venue Elland road. Boro won this game 3-0 with goals from Wilf Mannion & a brace from Alex McCrae

Represented Boro & Aston Villa

Bruce Rioch - Who was the late, great Willie Maddrens final recruit when he came in as 1st team coach & after the dismssal of Wilie Maddren took temporary charge on the 4th March 1986 in a 3-1 home win v Grimsby

Colin Todd - Like Bruce Rioch was on the Boro staff when we went into liquidation & when Bruce took over Colin Todd became his assistant, until Bruce was dismised Colin Todd then stood up to the position as manager of the Boro

Gareth Southgate & Ugo Ehiogu, two outstanding signings, Gareth as captain lifted our league cup wiining trophy & Ugo (RIP) who in the final moments of the final, denied Bolton a last minute equaliser when he throw himself into a rocket shot from a Bolton player, which would have nettled in tge back of our bet

Paul Kerr -  Signed from Aston Villa he was the clubs 1st cash signing after liquidation, ironically scoring his 1st Boro goal & the winner at the Holte end September 1987

Dean Glover - Signed from Aston Villa at the start of the 87/88 season, an important player for the Boro, playing 56 games, scoring 6 goals

Mark Burke - Signed from Aston Villa in December 1987, playing 56 games, scoring 6 goals

Adama Toure - Signed from Aston Villa played 71 games, between 2016/18, scoring 5 goals

Kevin Poole - Signed from Aston Villa our 46th used keeper, played 40 games between 1988/1991

Lee Turnbull - Came through the academy, played 17 games for the Boro, scoring 4 goals, he was part of the deal that brought Kevin Poole to the Boro

Pat Heard - Played 26 games, scoring 2 goals, 1985/86 season, he was our 4th loaned player when he arrived from Newcastle & after a number of appearances signed permanently

Luke Young - Gareth Southgate signed Luke in the summer of 2007, he went on to play 42 games, scoring the one goal, an important memeber of the 1st team & his only goal was a 30 yard scorcher v Spurs, after one season he was sold to Aston Villa

Brad Guzan - Signed from Aston Villa, he played 14 games in the one season, 2016/17

Rudy Gestede - A pointless signing by Karanka, IMHO, 70 games to many for us, scoring 8 goals, offered very little in his time here between 2017/20

Finn Azaz – Though he never played a 1st team game for Villa

Peter Davenport - He didn't really, but I wished he had
