Competition – The Championship

Date – Sat 13th January 2024

Kick off – 15:00

Introduction

Well, we did it! We beat Chelsea. Sadly there’s not much time to bask in this magnificent victory as we return to the mundane grindstone of the Championship with a visit to London’s premium tourist destination… The New Den. No groaning at the back please.

The Last Games

Boro: Boro 1 – 0 Chelsea

Boro recorded their first victory and scored their first goal against Chelsea since 2006. Last night, Raheem Sterling looked less like a £40m football player and more like a t-rex in desperate need of a visit to the chiropractor; whilst Cole Palmer looked like a character from the inbetweeners, and was about as effective at scoring… Boro went ahead on the 37th minute when a sumptuous pass from Barlaser met a patient Isaiah Jones. Jones worked it to the byline and crossed to Hackney who cool-ley side footed it into the net past the $500m keeper (probably). Chelsea went in at halftime to a rollocking from their manager Pochettino, who instructed them to use the Moses tactic in the second half – Run at the Boro defence and hope to God they part for you. Fortunately, the almighty was not on the blues’ side as the Boro defence remained steadfast, blocking attack after attack to ensure victory in the first leg of the draw.

Millwall: Millwall 2 – 3 Leicester

Like a child who has left their jam sandwiches and crisps strewn all over the floor of the tent in the back garden, and the doorway flapping wide open… Millwall welcomed the Foxes to the Den. They soon regretted doing so as the Foxes ate their sandwiches and then beat them 3-2 to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup. And gave them rabies. Watmore and Flemming grabbed the consolation goals for the home side.

Form (all competitions - most recent last)

Boro: WLWLLW

Millwall: DDWWWL

The View From The Other Side

Not really a match day thread, but https://millwallonline.com/forum/threads/boro-game.54977/

-       “Do we need any luck against them .... ???”

-       “Borough [sic] are bowing [sic] hot and cold, we can beat them anyway”

-       “Boro lost 2 more players with injury last night and even though they won where [sic] chasing shadows for much of the game”

-       “They have just signed Ayling on loan from Leeds. He played well against us earlier this season.”

The Un(ger)-Official Match Preview

Despite their recent uptick in form (unbeaten in 5 championship games), Millwall are still down in 15th position, 4 points behind the Boro. Google tips Boro as slight favourites with 38% chance of a Victory (to 'wall’s 34%). It’s a game that could go either way. After correctly predicting a 1-0 win over Chelsea, I will hereby correctly predict a 2-2 draw.

Talking Points

- Will we see any of our new signings from the off? Or injured players back into the team?

- What is your favourite London tourist destination (apart from the new Den of course)?

- Will Watmore score against us?

- Which other player would you have liked us to have bought alongside Saville in a double signing from Millwall in 2018?

- Do you remember ‘Um Ognob’?

I can see Carrick maybe resting one of two players to protect then from injury.

* Jones and Barlaser I think have started 7 games in 21 days so could see then teo been given a breather.

* Would be surprised to see Ayling start but not totally shocked as might allow a Clarke a breather so not to play 3 games in 7 days this early in his recovery

* Coburn was not meant to start on Tuesday but has also played more games than hoped for given his injury struggles.

Could see us lining up like this:

Glovee

Ayling Fry VDB Engel

Howson Hackney

Rogers Azaz Greenwood

Crooks

Subs: Jones, Clarke Bilongo O'Brien, Barlaser, Jones, Gilbert, Coburn, Kav

Ugh, should be motivated for this but after the high of the Chelsea game I can't bring myself to care at the moment.

Hopefully the players don't feel the same way! At least we'll have Rogers and Greenwood (lol) back. May well see a debut for Azaz and possibly Ayling, if Carrick reverts to the back 4 and VDB goes back to CB. Would be harsh to drop either Clarke or Fry after their heroics against Chelsea, mind.

Natural History Museum, hands down.

No

Jake Cooper

I do, funnily enough. I also remember Libby's Moonshine!

Injury news from Carrick's presser:

1. LL and Bangura face a few weeks out

2. Forss back in training and could be on bench v Millwall

3. Paddy should be training soon.

4. Dijksteel should be fit Chelsea 2nd leg

Sounds weird but I think it will be harder to win games with more players to choose from.

Its that triumph over adversity thing isn't it? You know, when you're up against it, players step up and all that.

That said, I can't wait for everybody to come back for the playoff push that sees us go up via Wembley later this year (our 2nd visit to Wemberleyyyy obvs)

azaz could be good for greenwood as well, if they are going to play in the same position then it could well be what he needs to get his concentration levels back to where they need to be, bit of new competition can do wonders and if he don't react then so be it
