Teams – Boro v Rotherham

Location – The Ryversyde

Competition – The Championship

Date – Sat 20th January 2024

Kick off – 15:00

Introduction

It’s been a great week for playing London teams. Sadly, this weekend’s opponents are not from the big smoke (“all we had to do was follow the damn train CJ”), so may prove more of a challenge. Rotherham come into the game in poor form, with the only win from their last six games coming against *checks notes* oh, Middlesbrough…

The Last Games

Boro: Millwall 1 – 3 Boro

Boro withstood an early barrage from the Lions, other than letting a goal in after 10 minutes of course. Engel, Jones and Forss clawed goals back for the Boro in a hard fought win, leaving us 1 point from the play-offs. The Millwall fans serenaded the Boro fans with classics such as:  "Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil", and also: "Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil" which led to a really great atmosphere and will be fondly remembered by all those lucky enough to attend the game.

Rotherham: Rotherham 0 – 1 Stoke

Lewis Baker struck from a cracking free kick in injury time in the first half to give stoke the three points and maintain Steven Schumacher’s unbeaten run as Stoke manager. The millers looked dangerous at set pieces, but rarely looked like grabbing an equaliser. The loss leaves the Rotherham 8 points adrift of 21st place.

Form (all competitions - most recent last)

Boro: LWLLWW

Rotherham: LWDDLL

The Un(ger)-Official Match Preview

God knows why we’re playing Rotherham again after three weeks, but we are. With Rotherham rooted to the bottom of the table and Middlesbrough at home, surely we won’t typical-Boro it up again will we?! Google has us as 78% likely to win, and google have probably been listening to Leam Richardson’s smart speaker, so they know what they’re talking about. They also know that he plays Barry Mannilow’s Copacabana on repeat at home, but that’s another matter…

Boro to win 3 – 0 to set us up nicely for the Chelsea game. I think Hackney and a couple of others will be rested. We’re likely to see the new lads Azaz and Ayling start and Carrick will probably use the Forss up front.

The AI Match Preview

I asked ChatGPT to write me a preview for the game. This is what it gave me:

With both teams eyeing vital points for different reasons, this clash between Middlesbrough and Rotherham promises to be a spectacle of footballing prowess. Fans can expect end-to-end action, moments of brilliance, and perhaps a late twist that could define the destiny of the match. Strap in for an exhilarating encounter as these two teams battle it out for supremacy on the pitch.

Talking Points

- Which (if any) players will be rested with the Chelsea game on the Tuesday in mind?

- Will the game be a spectacle of footballing prowess?

- Would you rather Carrick left to go to Crystal palace OR you have to listen to Barry Mannilow’s Copacabana for 24 hours straight?

- What is your favourite ham?

If other results go our on saturday, we could be facing Chelsea in the final spot of the playoffs

What I want

What we'll probably get

Don't rest any players, the last time we did that against Rotherham we got beaten (although that was away and we have a good record against the Millers at the Riverside tbh okay except the 3-0 defeat during the covid season okay shut up whatever)

Probably not, we'll have one eye on Chelsea and Rotherham will likely soak up all our pressure and try to hit us on the counter. It'll not be a high scoring game but I think we'll do enough to get the win. Just need to avoid injuries!

Copacabana seeing as I actually quite like that song. 24 hours of it though? Hmmm, Mr Carrick? London's calling...

All focus on Chelsea for me, you couldn’t ask for a better side to rest players against than Rotherham currently (I’m aware we got beat last time) but facts are facts. Tuesday is a million times bigger

I think you can almost rotate in a normal fashion. Going to assume that none of our injured are fit enough to start.

Glover

Ayling - Fry - RVDB - Engel

Barlaser - Hackney

Jones - Azaz - Rogers

Greenwood

The key is, I reckon, being able to swap out 3 players on around 60 minutes.

If we're behind then, Jones, Rogers and Hackney off > Forss, Howson, Crooks on

If we're ahead  switch to 3 at the back with the same three off but Clarke, Forss and Howson coming on.

Azaz, Greenwood and Ayling are all cup-tied so they get to play the whole match. We'll need a whole 90 out of Jones and Rogers against Chelsea and at least 75 minutes out of Hackney so they all get subbed off at the first chance. We're probably looking for a full 90 from Clarke and Howson against Chelsea so they get a max of 30 minutes against Rotherham. I wonder if O'Brien might be fit enough to get 10 minutes on the pitch.

Personally, if we don't have any new signings in I would be really tempted to start Kavanagh and give Jones a decent rest. I don't see Carrick doing that. He has to stop playing Rogers as a striker though.

Got to go all out for a win here and play our strongest possible team.

It's a vital game for our season, lots of teams around us are playing each other, the Chelsea match should be on the back-burner.

A win here and we're guaranteed to leapfrog at least one team, and either create a gap on or gain on at least another 3.

They were Crooks last time out as they stole a win but Boro will go full Forss on an Ayling Rotherham side who will need the help of an Engel to get something here, 5-0 to the Boro.

I think Carrick is going to want both Clarke and Howson for the Chelsea game so he's going for 4-2-3-1 with Fry/VDB and Hackney/Barlaser. Also Azaz and Greenwood will play due to them sitting out the chelsea game.

amazing to think we gone from 14 players injured to resting hackney within 1 game :classic_tongue: never thought that would be the case a few weeks ago lol
