I would like to see O’Brien and Hackney play as the 2 in midfield.

McGree, Azaz, Greeenwood in the 3.

               Forss up top.

Your midfield suggestion had me thinking that I would just like to see a cohesive selection all over the pitch, one where everyone knows their roles and responsibilities, in and out of possession. It's been a long time since I watched a Boro side with joined up thinking, intuitive movements and passages of play.

Whether by luck or judgement, last season Carrick pretty much had a settled formation from day 1. This season it feels like he has been shoehorning players into a different role every other game. The never-ending injury crisis combined with massive overhaul means it is hard to be critical. Thing is, even though he nearly always stays with some sort of 4-2-3-1 on paper, on the pitch it feels like he's trying a different version more often than not. Whatever he does, though, it looks complicated. Players seem to be in odd parts of the pitch, making odd runs and passing in a slow and laborious manner because, presumably, no one is quite sure where the other one is today.

I do think Carrick and co have got themselves lost in the weeds of trying to make an ever more complicated system work by adding more complication to it. You look at Edwards at Luton and he is doing just the reverse. Keeping it simple. I can't help thinking that at some point we need to stop trying to invent some sort of perfect system that will win us games and strip it back to basics.

The injuries will have been part of the problem but the entire point of a system is that everyone in the Club, not just those on the pitch are fully on board and aligned. I can accept the quality not being to the same standard but it's much more than that as your post eloquently points out. So frustrating to watch this season in contrast to last season. Edwards from memory was mooted for the Boro role and I think he was Scott's preference and Carrick was SG's out of the shortlist, whatever the reality of that was or perhaps wasn't, Edwards does seem to able to mould and adapt to suit a given set of circumstances and to get the most out of what he has to work with.

Think everything just clicked at Luton for Edwards, if Chuba had scored from one of his two chances away to Coventry then we'd have played Luton in the final & who knows, but Coventry bullied us, knocked us out of our game plan & the rest as they say, is history.

If Edwards keeps Luton up & at the moment he's doing a great job, then for me he should be rewarded with the PL manager of the season award, he wont though, that'll go to the eventual winners

Be great to have Dieng back for this.

Then having mcgree back will be a big boost and bring alot more energy to the side.

I'd also like to see Dijksteel start at RB feel Ayling has been exposed abit in last couple games.

                      Dieng

     Dijksteel. RVB Clarke. Engel

              Hackney.    Obrian

  Greenwood     Azaz      Mcgree

                         Forss

Bristol City have went to extra time tonight in the cup, and the team is apparently almost as strong as they can put out.

Good news for us.

Was just about to say that. Should give us an advantage in the final 20 mins or so on Saturday.

I think luton will probs find that how they cracking on right now works against teams, but when have to play them the second time they will come back smarter, often see this trend in teams that find a system that works, seen us do it plenty of times before as well

Hello from a Bristol City fan

Ahead of our forthcoming game I’m putting together the opening post for our forum’s (One Team in Bristol, https://www.otib.co.uk/?_fromLogin=1) match thread, which will be posted the day before the match.

I would like to include some perspectives from your fans so if anybody would like to share info please do, anything would be appreciated, fans thoughts about the game, players who have represented both clubs, tales from when we’ve met previously, a fans view on your season, away pubs (seems the usual haunts have closed), etc.

Look forward to receiving info and to a great game.
