I know if you get relegated you deserve to but that 1988/89 season we didnt deserve to be, with hindsight buying a few more experienced defensive midfield players instead of Davenport would have, IMO, seen us finish in a comfortable position Edited April 2, 2024 by Erimus74
Stitchy 277 174
My first season was 87/88 and I was falsely led to believe they were all like that. That 88/89 team would've done great things if we could've just stayed in the division. Alas, playing Cooper who couldn't run and Hamilton who barely played again. I think we had maybe 4, 3-3 draws that season which shows what great entertainment it was
p_mards 1,905 8.5k
After the full-time whistle Greenwood immediately dropped to the floor and painfully took his boots off before walking around the pitch and into the tunnel in just his socks. I'm assuming it's just blisters or something like that and not an injury as such.

Preston's I think is Southampton away so who knows what will happen in that one. But I think Hull's game in hand is against Coventry so there's a good chance one of those teams gets a 3-point boost. We also have Leeds, Ipswich and Hull themselves to play in our final 6. It's not over, we've gone from having people worried about relegation to talking about playoffs again what feels like very quickly and credit to Carrick and the players for that. But I think it's incredibly unlikely. I think looking at the teams in the running, Norwich are probably gonna make it by virtue of their run-in looking a lot kinder than all the other chasing teams. They have Ipswich next but then it's only Preston left to play from a promotion perspective. Sheff Wed and Brum could still need points to survive but Norwich should beat them regardless. With their goal difference advantage, we'd likely have to gain 7 points on Norwich as well. It's not impossible, say they won two, drew two, and lost two, then we'd need 15 points from our remaining 6 games. Obviously if they somehow had a worse run then we might need fewer points. Stitchy 277 174
I know he has been part of some fundraising stuff in the past but I'd love for the club to bring Brucey back on a matchday as a special guest, like they did with Leo previously. Bruce and Toddy deserve some recognition for that from the current fan base. Can't imagine many of our managers since then paying wages from their own pockets and working for nothing.

I can't imagine many fans under 50 or even 55 years old would remember or fully appreciate what went on during that desperate period. Doesn't mean the Club shouldn't invite them of course.

Knowing Boro we'll go into the final game with a mathematical shout, but lose to Watford and other results will go against us. You just know it! 😆

Snowblind 2,392 7.2k
I'm too young to remember the Bruce Rioch era, but I remember him being in charge at Arsenal and my dad waxing lyrical about him. A guy the club owes so much to. Also remember my dad's old Boro videos and those making me want to be the next Graeme Souness 😂
Stitchy 277 174
Bernard Gent on a matchday, seemingly playing Rick Astley on a loop. The wooden seats in the North Stand. The ball boys in those strange orange and white outfits that they wore. I recall the atmosphere always being loud and behind the team. Great times and happy memories which I hope my kids have similar memories about the Riverside when they get to my age. Then the match started and Dean Glover and Hammy smashing into the opposition, Bernie being constantly offside. Proper connections between the club and the fans. Happy times, but yeah Brucey is legend of the club in my eyes.

We would also have to take into account that Hull Preston and Coventry would also need to perform poorly and drop quite a few of their available points too. It's nice to still be in with a shout mathematically considering where we were at the start of the season and how people were looking over their shoulders at relegation a month ago, but there's no chance we can finish in the playoffs realistically is my view.

Coventry play Leeds on Saturday, good chance they drop points. One of Hull and Coventry is guaranteed to drop points, if not both, when they play each other. We'd likely need to beat Hull to reach the play-offs anyway, so that's another match they'd drop points in. If we win our games, and it's obviously a big if, we'll overtake all 3 of them. It's Norwich that I think will be difficult to catch if they beat Ipswich on Saturday, even with us in good form.

Fully agree but Saturday's fixture see Norwich playing Ipswich, Hull away at Cardiff, Preston away at Watford and Coventry home to Leeds. If I was a gambler I'd put money on defeats or draws for the four of them. Cardiff blow hot and cold but are only 2 points off Hull and would overtake them with a win, Preston on paper have the easiest task away to Watford but Vicarage Road is never an easy fixture. Leeds are on a roll and I think Coventry will struggle and the same with Norwich in the Tractor Derby. Should we beat Swansea it would look even more tantalising on Saturday evening but I still think we have left it too late and will rue those Rotherham and Plymouth games.
