Boro v Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 (Ihiekwe (og), Jones)

The injuries are really biting us at the moment so Carrick has decisions to make today. If nobody is back and we're playing 5-2-1-2 then we're looking at: Dieng; Ayling, Howson, Clarke, Thomas, Engel; Barlaser, O'Brien; Azaz; Greenwood, Lath. He could switch the forward 3 into two #10's and a striker, but I don't think that suits our players suit that style.

Lath's strong finish to the season provides real encouragement for next season. Hopefully more of our players with potential like Azaz, Silvera & Greenwood (though on loan) can follow suit by finding their form before the end of the season. Due to attacking injuries they're likely get a lot of game time in the final 7 games.

not sure there is much potential in Silveira and greenwood. i'm willing to bet middlesbrough is the biggest high they are going to have in their career. i'm hoping the forgotten men like the young lad who got the assist on friday we will see more of, and some of the young academy lads get a chance. samy is very lightweight, dont think he'll ever become a key player, and greenwood is a passenger, the games pass him by and he doesnt get involved or do anything notable. the workrate seems pretty good when he's closing down, but if you look he often doesnt even track back or pick men up, its like hes a lazy player but puts in a bit of token closing down when people are looking.

You mean Greenwood who has 25 appearances in the premier league?

Not bad considering.

Engel unlucky to be dropped tbh but happy Jones is fit enough to start.

Greenwood over Gilbert though, hmmm what sort of signal does that send to our younger and more importantly permanent players?

Edit - Yes I know Greenwood and Gilbert are the same age, but Gilbert is our player.

John Hickton played for both us and Wednesday.

The legend that he is made his Boro debut on his 22nd birthday in a 3-2 home win over Workington Town, we were trailing 2-0 with big John wearing No5 shirt & getting the runaround off their experienced CF until we were awarded a penalty & with penalty taker Dicky Rookes not playing, who JH was in for, no player stepped forward, but big John did & scored, the penalty king was born & Boro went on to win 3-2

Greenwood getting the nod over Gilbert seems a strange one considering recent events. Thomas over Engel is another strange one, I don't think Engel had a great game on Friday but he was rated highly elsewhere and got MOM because of Stats (not that I buy into Stats at the best of times).

A couple of misplaced passes and Thomas will be under pressure today with moans and groans from the stands so I think Wednesday will look to capitalise down our left. That said they had Engel on toast last time so that's maybe a factor in Carrick's reasoning. Hope Thomas has a breakthrough game today.

Gilbert comes on looks up and plays a cracking cross into the box for Lath to rescue us a point and his reward is to be sat on the bench again. The lad may be useless but unless he is given three or four games to settle in how will we ever know, training ground stats are fine up to a point but some players just do not progress until they are on the big pitch

Only reason to argue with Engel getting dropped is that Thomas has been worse whenever he's played.

I feel sorry for Gilbert if he can set up a decisive equaliser and the anonymous Greenwood is still ahead of him.
