Actually it wasn't just a "fashionable" fad for tree huggers. Grouse and pheasant were never hunted almost to extinction, as far as I know. Whereas many whale species have either become extinct or come perilously close...hence why there was an international moratorium on whaling for decades. While it continued in a very limited capacity in certain places, (e.g. among Inuit and other indigenous populations), in most places it was illegal. Think some species are still protected, in fact, because whale populations take so long to recover. On a related note, over-fishing has also become such a problem that catching certain fish species is having to be curtailed to protect fish stocks. Whereas the landed gentry never actually shot massive numbers of deer or wildfowl. If we don't want to endanger our food supplies, nations' customs and traditions have to take a back seat to preserving wildlife.
