Doak and Jones to alternate wings.

But I genuinely hate 4231 - I'd love us to play two up front.  Those formation seem to be out of fashion now though.

This line up but with Borges instead of McCormick.

Wilder looks like someone shat in his shoe and stole his socks. I hope he gets a puncture on the way home and by the time he gets back, his dinner's in the dog and his wife has left a note on the work

  • Everybody knows that to beat us you set up in a low block, let us have the ball as much as we want and then hit us in the break. What we need is to play against a manager with a head like a bucket who

Sorry but needs must this now becomes the official match day thread so hey if we win @Smogkiwi you get to do the Norwich thread (is there any chance I wonder)

Sadly @SmogDane has not been active for a while and perhaps that might be good for him so you now follow Smogkiwi! Sonni

Kick off 2000hrs Wednesday 23rd October an main sky sports viewing match

We know what is at stake with the return of Chris Wilder have we got what it takes

Can the Boro score more than one goal just to keep the natives happy?

Sorry about this everyone but something needed to be done about getting the thread up and running

Over to you guys!

Hope @SmogDaneis okay. I know the Boro aren't.

If we lose tomorrow night, we'll have the same number of points as we did at the same stage last season. Which begs the question - what progress has there been if last year's atrocious start hasn't been bettered in terms of points?

Indeed and this was the time we went on a 7 match winning spree and you all know I begged for @MRe to volunteer again

This start is already worse than last year's, for me. Last was Carrick's first full season as a manager and he'd lost most of his best players. Then he had injuries to contend with and some talented but young players to bring up to speed.

This time he's had a year longer to figure things out. We got what we needed in the window and have a much healthier squad. Kind opening fixtures to boot. Just really disappointing.

For what it's worth, I bet we look alright in this game even if we don't win. We always do against teams that want the ball and give us space to counter into.

See a couple of calls for Jones back in the starting lineup, have to disagree. He's got a lot of strengths but finishing is probably his weakest attribute. I said in the bristol thread, we need assured players in front of goal right now more than anything. I'd also keep Ayling in for now but ask him to just focus on putting the ball into the box. He's our best crosser but for some reason he's not been finding himself in those positions this season.

---------------Dieng----------------

Ayling-- VDB--Clarke--Borges

----------Hackney--Morris-------

Doak-------Conway-----McGree

----------------Forss------------------

With Conway basically playing alongside Forss when attacking. We need more men in the box.

I think he moved to New Zealand and this is his new account

It should be an easy 3 points this. I read on here that Wilder is wedded to a single system, had no plan B, has been found out and is therefore easy to play against. Looking forward to exposing this charlatan for what he is.

It will be very interesting to see how Carrick lines up tomorrow night.

For the first time I am stumped to who will start. He could genuinely change about 6 players in the line up.

I'm fully expecting Clarke to come back in for Edmundson.

Then McGree, Forss, Conway and Jones could all come in.

If Howson is fit (which I very much doubt because he didn't even make the bench on Sat) he could come in.

Carrick isn't one for making lots of changes, but something has to give.

I think it'll be:

Dieng

Ayling/Rav/Clark/Borges

Morris/Hackney

Forss/Conway/McGree

ELL

But like I said, that front 4 could be literally any 4 from Forss/Jones/Doak/Conway/Azaz/McGree/Burgzorg/Hamilton/ELL

On Jones I've been really disappointed with his reaction to losing his spot to Doak, I thought he'd bust a gut when he come on, really try to prove he deserves to be in the team but his body language hasn't been great.

I'm just hoping for inspiration, something to get excited about and have a small tinge of belief starting to bud.

I've been hoping for a while now under Carrick that today (or tomorrow, or the day after, or next weekend etc.) would be the day so I'd be amazed if anything radical actually happens but it's never too late (even though deep down I suspect it is). I've got work commitments tomorrow night and normally I'd bend and twist my diary to see the game but like the WBA game a few weeks back I'm not sure if it's worth the effort any more (maybe I'm the Jonah and I should give it a miss like I did WBA).

Hoping for a line in the sand, defiant display, and a message from Carrick that he's not finished yet. What I think we'll get however is more missed sitters, soft goals conceded and a left side that's totally virginal in another Groundhog day showing but with really impressive xG stats to cuddle.

Reading that back I've used the word "hoping" repeatedly, that's what it's come to I suppose. 🤷‍♂️

I'd love for Carrick to tactically destroy Wilder. Will be a tough ask as Shef have a good team. But West Brom was tough and we all saw how that went!

I'm in Germany, so will miss the game in person. Imagine I'll be banished permanently if we win!

3-0 Boro.

Playing Sheffield United on a Wednesday has got to be a good omen for us.
