Burnley v Boro 1-1 (Dijksteel)

Burnley v BORO

20.00, Fri 6 Dec

Turf Moor

(live on sky tele)

This Bit:

Hull’s Tigers were left licking their sorry paws after the Lions of Middlesbrough swept them aside in a return to winning ways on Saturday. Two goals from goal scoring superstar hero Tommy Conway and another from Mr Fantastic Finn Azaz saw the Boro recover from the goalless midweek 0-1 draw-defeat against Blackburn Rovers.

If Michael Carrick was worried about Hull scoring goals that weren’t goals, he didn’t show it. A bold team selection saw Tom Glover retain his place on the bench as Seny Dieng continued to recover from his 30th Birthday celebrations. (It’s rumoured that the recent illness “going through the team” stems from the vol-au-vents served at Dieng’s soft play party at the Rainbow Centre in Coulby Newham. Dieng loves a vol-au-vent with a cream cheese filling, and only let his best friend Neto Borges share them, much to Carrick’s disapproval, but it was his party so he could do what he liked. Unfortunately, the lads were having so much fun with the wobbly clown, the buffet was out for too long and the soft cheese turned. Staff at the Rainbow centre had told Woodgate the food was ready only for him to retort that the table was lying and the buffet wasn’t there yet.)

Another Bit:

Next up sees Boro visit Burnley, the first team in England to employ footballers in a professional role. The “Clarets” originally played in a green kit, but changed the colour to see if they could be as lucky as Aston Villa, and presumably to make sense of their nickname. Current Manager Scott Parker seems to have the nouse to get teams out of the league; most recently winning promotion with Bournemouth, having previously won promotion and relegation with Fulham. The most interesting thing about Scott Parker is that his first 4 England caps were earned whilst representing 4 different Premier League clubs. There’s something I can’t put my finger on, but I don’t get good vibes from him, never have. I’m glad he’s not our boss.

Burnley find themselves 2nd in the championship having won 10 of their opening 18 fixtures. A stubborn defence means Burnley have conceded just 6 goals this season. They’ll be pleased that the £17m they spent on keeper James Trafford is finally paying off. Last seasons relegation from the Premier League saw the failing upwards of manager Vincent Kompany as he left to manage Bayern Munich instead. Aside from Kompany’s departure, Burnley kept much of their squad in tact. They are a strong team and should do well in the championship this season.

View from the other side:

The Burnley fans like to go >here< on the internet to talk about all things Burnley.

They seem happy with the team spirit this season and feel like Parker has finally got things heading to on the right direction. Looking ahead to the January transfer window, they’d like to see a striker singed with some suggesting left back is a weak area of the team… Great news for us, because Ben Doak is class!

Used to love a Friday night game under Karanka - automatic three points! Back when Burnley were our key promotion rivals too.

Need to be at our best for this one and can't afford to gift any goals via individual errors. Hoping Morris is back but doesn't seem likely.

                      Dieng

Ayling - Edmundson - Clarke - Borge

          Hackney - Howson

       Doak - Azaz - Burgzorg

                       Lath

Let's face it, any sort of result there is a good result and if we want to have any sort of a chance at the top 2, we have to come away with a draw.

I've a feeling, given the stakes, that injuries aside, Carrick will pick his "leaders" so I suspect.

Dieng

Ayling - Edmundson - Clarke - Borges

Howson - Hackney

Doak - Azaz - Burgzorg/McGree

Latte Lath

I think he may be looking at starting with ELL and Burgzorg and try a fast, aggressive start in order to try and get an early lead. Then sub in Conway and (if fit) McGree relatively early by his standards as those two are better at keeping the ball.

Currently it's the best defence vs the best attack.

Positive me thinks 1-1 is on the cards. They do have a huge injury crisis in defence and I think their solidity is more due to Cullen and Brownhill being the Clayton and Leadbitter of this season. We need Howson to roll back the years and take the fight to them with Hackney. What gives me hope is that they have had a long period of playing poor teams and grinding out 1-0 wins. Their record against top 6 teams (i.e. teams who were in the top 6 when they played them) is fair but not great.

Sunderland (a) lost 1-0. Blackburn (h) 1-1. Leeds (a) won 1-0. WBA (a) 1-1.

Negative me dreads Turf Moor.

Yeah. My actual concern would be 2nd choice keeper because I don't think Glover is up to it. To be precise, I think Dieng is currently the better keeper and experience counts for a *lot* as a keeper. Give Brynn half a season and I think you have a top-half Championship keeper.

if they come to the conclusion in the summer after the rest of the season then I'd trust them on it, too early to push that button in January, unless he is trying to force a move and maybe this is another reason why we are rolling with sol

Exciting game this one although I can't watch. Tough call on the result but obviously Burnley are big favourites. I think they will probably go on a win it but if we vcan get that first goal then there is every chance we get a decent result. We obviously have the firepower to score.

How long is Morris out for? We need his determination and workrate back in the middle. Howson and Barlaser just ain't the same.

If Dieng really is leaving in january I see no reason why we should't keep going with Brynn. He seems like a decent keeper at this level and he needs a chance to prove that he is either ready or not. If he falls through then we can get a new in january and if he proves himself in the coming 4-6 weeks then we'll have saved a lot of money and have another local lad in the side.

Who knows what's happening with Dieng anyway. Still a good position to be in though, Dieng is good at this level and a Brynn is starting to make a real deal of the competition.

I think we'd have to see a lot more of Brynn before I could make a judgement, he's not actually really faced that many shots yet either way.

He's played 4 games for us, conceding 9 goals from 17 shots on target, admittedly 5 of those goals and shots were in a scratch cup side.

He's still made some good to great saves, against Oxford especially, but I'll hold fire on my opinion for now.

Some people were raving about Glover at the start of his spell in goal with us before the errors started creeping in.

I suppose one difference here is that Glover came to us with an already questionable reputation, Sol Brynn has had great reviews at his loan clubs.
