People clearly want to talk about the game @Downsouth Can you please put up a first post holding page and flesh it out later in the week if you're not going to do it now?

Tell you what Matt seeing as you have never volunteered to do a MDT  you can expand the opening post and this can be yours.

Remember if you win then the next game is yours also🤞

Even if you ignored the derby repercussions and pressure, given we're playing a better after them, it can't be seen as a free hit.

Would take a draw right now, but results over the weekend will possibly ramp up the stakes.

Monday night football and on free to air TV, so both of those will dampen the crowd and appeal, even with it being Sunderland.

The only way I can see Boro getting a result is if they do a positive "typical Boro" and turn up against our high-flying local rivals.

Plus we did lose our last game, so I guess the next result should be a win? 🤷‍♂️

Those are the only positives I can see about this game. Everything else we know about Boro (and indeed Sunderland) points to a win for the visitors:

- Home form being generally dodgy this season.

- A defence that seems to think trying to stop the opposition scoring is optional.

- The fact we still haven't mastered the art of playing out from the back and are prone to mistakes.

- A forward line thats as temperamental as a classic car. When it fires it purrs like a well-oiled machine, but most of the time splutters and coughs and refuses to get going no matter how much you hit it with a hammer!

Said it before the west brom game that it was the kind of game we go out and win with a good performance. This is too.

2-1 boro

I think we are consistently good when we start a game knowing that we won't be able to dominate possession. We seem to be better focused on shape without the ball and defending competently. If you look at matches against teams in the top 4, we've done pretty well.

Sunderland's manager has shown, though, that he's prepared to concede possession against us because he's learned that when you give us plenty of the ball it sabotages us. We're the only possession-based team in the world that gets worse the more possession we have.

What I expect is for Sunderland to kick the ball to us at the start of the game and say "go on then, it's yours" and wait for us to screw-up.

As far as I can see, our defensive struggles happen when our defenders start thinking too much about how to keep the ball to start an attack. If we get lucky with an early goal and Sunderland have to attack then I reckon we'll be ok because we can slip into our focused on defending pattern.

Probably this is a game with pretty much equal odds of any result. I suspect it'll end up 0-0. Sunderland won't want to take risks and we're still trying to figure out how to win games when we actually have the ball.
