We've been terrible tactically for the past two seasons, had a weak culture and were awful on set pieces so I'm really glad that we've been uncharacteristically decisive with sacking Carrick, Woodgate and Graeme Carrick. We've seemignly identified Rob Edwards as the man for the head coach role, who brings the same positives that Carrick had with his man management and having the right personality to fit into our club structure (until January anyway), but unlike Carrick he also actually has impressive promotions on his CV where he's had clubs punching above their weight to promotions in financially tight circumstances - which is always a good measure of a manager. And we're seemingly close to bringing in Michael Beale who has a very good reputation for being a good tactician - but less good on the man management side. So they seem like they should compliment each other very well with the mix of man management and tactical knowledge. And we're also looking to bring in Harry Waitling as a specialist set-piece coach, who was a complete unknown to me until tonight. From the brief bits I've heard of him he sounds impressive given how young he was when he got his coaching badges and his record of Rangers scoring 20 set-piece goals in 30 games when he was their specialist set piece coach under Beale. From the outside looking in it looks like we're putting together a good mix of individual strengths in the coaching team with an actual plan for once! Our coaching appointments previously felt like Gibson got out his old contact book and sent some desperate texts to inadequate people with links to the club. Super post.

Edwards signed his new Luton contract 19th June last year. Tomorrow is 19th June. I think that could be why. Some weird situation around his compensation where one day it costs some amount and the next day it costs significantly less.

The unfancied Rob Edwards boss, Sunderland failed manager as assistant, selling our best players etc - I can hear them now. I'll give them time and trust the club has a plan, but a lot won't. Shame on those who don't. I'm not sure i've witnessed such a disproportionate reaction to the appointment of a manager at the Boro like this before. Particularly one that's not overly offensive i.e. Warnock/Pulis. Edited June 18 by Humpty

Posts like these make me so glad I deleted X. I think partly why I wasn’t as down on Carrick as other people was because I was removed from the boro social media sphere (except for here, which I didn’t check religiously throughout the season). When all you see is negativity, it’s impossible for that not to seep into your own mindset at least a bit. Even if you personally reject a negative interpretation, if everyone else is seemingly down about something (ignoring the fact that social media is not representative of the entire fanbase) then it gives the impression that the overall mood around the club is sour. I feel fine about Edwards. Not thrilled, but fine and I hope it works out. That hope is rooted in the positives of Edwards’ track record as opposed to when I was hopeful for, say, Woodgate’s reign which was hope based on absolutely nothing.

GrimsbyBoro 2,390 3k
I really hope it works out for Edward’s and Boro. I think certain parties in the club have got what they wanted with regards to the manager and hopefully that’s a good thing. I think it’s been clear for a while that Edward’s was the choose one and is probably what spurred on the sacking. The cynic in me says the club have done a good job of making it look like there was a process. Three options the chosen one the one who doesn’t want it and the one we won’t pay for. But perhaps that’s too cynical. it is nice to see new and fresh coaches coming in hopefully these are Edward’s choices and not from the club. If they are from the club I can understand if Carrick didn’t want these for an under pressure manager Beale would feel like the King in waiting. i a think a few fans might have to get used to wingbacks and direct football but with some luck it’s successful.
