If we could somehow get him to stay and get a centre midfielder who can score goals as the second 8 with Morris anchoring and recycling, my God. As great as hackney has been for us I think we've wasted his talents a little by playing him in a 2. Yeah it would also mean azaz wouldn’t fit but if we could keep Hackney for one more year it would be amazing for us in that system

I appreciate we don't currently have the players to make the system work, but it gives you three at the back, width with pace down the flanks if you choose the right WBs, lets you play two up front (I am so unspeakably sick of watching Boro toil away with one lone striker against a back four) and still put three men into midfield. My personal formation of choice would be 4132, but I don't get the hate for wingbacks. What was Rösler doing that was so unenjoyable to watch? It’s a formation that requires world class players to work. Like when Italy deploy it. Just do t think players at this level is good enough for it to be effective. As you say, the thought behind it sounds appealing, but in reality it’s pretty dire. You more often than not have too many defensive players because the wide defenders at this level don’t have to ability to carry the ball and help in attack and the wingbacks usually aren’t good enough to help the attack effectively. That leaves you with a couple of isolated strikers. And that was exactly what happened with Rösler despite some good showings. It worked better when we had Yann Bisseck in defense but that was because he was way too good for the league and was able to carry the ball and be a threat. Once he left for Inter it started to fall apart.
TeaCider24 18,215 23.3k
I loved wingbacks for a while, but yeah, the way it ended under Wilder tainted it and I started to really dislike it. But I suppose that's the case for everything when things go sour.

Put it off me for life as irrational as that is. 433 for me, there's a reason all the top sides in world football use it. It's funny because I understand what you're saying - but it's really because of Wilder that I liked the wingbacks to begin with too. When his head was in the building, we could be wonderful to watch. estonpidge 1,836 6.5k
The First Summer under Carrick we had the Akpom money to spend, Last summer we had the Rogers money to spend and this time we have the ELL money plus any other sales, this is the system. Whilst the money available to recruitment is growing the performance of the the team has not. We've failed to capitalise on an apparently weak division by failing to even make the play offs, lost around 25 points from winning positions and refused to adjust the tactics to get the best out of the players available. So if one side of the system is working you go forwards with that and change the side that's failing, which is what the club have done. No guarantees that the change will work but sticking and hoping for the best wasn't going to work either, at least this way we've given ourselves a chance for improvement, depending on making the correct appointment, which I guess we'll have to wait to see if it's made.

estonpidge 1,836 6.5k
In an effective 433 the wide forward players need pace to stretch the pitch, giving more room to play or the ability to attack effectively in transition.

At least 2 PL teams are already in touch (we already knew that I guess). I sincerely hope we get a bidding war but I’m guessing it’ll be the usual dance around between us, them and the player / agent! VdB has tentative interest from Palace and Newcastle.

I see the 10 as a bit of a luxury that you can only really afford if you’re significantly better than your opposition. We’d be a lot more balanced and defensively solid as a result imo. A proper DM who’s job is just to recycle possession and screen the back 4 and then two lung-busting 8’s playing box to box.

And I wouldn't be surprised if this picks up speed as Guehi to Newcastle is also picking up a bit of speed now (he's only got 1 year left too so Palace may have to reluctantly sell). Guehi to Newcastle will leave Palace needing at least 1 CB (probably 2 with the injuries they had at CB last year).
