Proper Beer Thread (Lager chat allowed as long as it's not Carling or even worse, Fosters)

Featured Replies

Thread to talk about the beer you like! Want to chat about your favourite breweries? Go for it. Feel free to recommend beers to other posters (and compare tasting notes if you're a beer snob like me!)

Anything beer related is fine, but do try to stay away from Macro beer discussion - there's only so much one can say about the likes of Carling/Fosters/Carlsberg/Heineken.

Breweries what I like

Deya, Track, Verdant, Omnipollo, Tartarus, Vocation, Left Handed Giant, Evil Twin, Neon Raptor, Brass Castle, Brew York, Emperor (some incredible stouts), Rivington, Pomona Island, SALT,  Pressure Drop, Northern Monk, Yonder...to name a few.

Beer styles I like

Stout (mainly imperial), Pale Ales, Double IPAs (hazy and dank), Triple IPAs (super hazy and dank!), Quadruple IPAs (feel that hop burn!), New England IPAs (although every bloody brewery does them these days and the market is saturated), Belgian Dubbels and Tripels, Saisons.

Beer styles I do not like

Lager, Sours, West Coast IPA.

Denzel Zanzibar's Top 5 Rated Beers According To His Untappd Profile

1. Emperor x Omnipollo - Dengar's Church (No Damson) Vanilla Coconut Fudge (Imperial Stout, 11% ABV)

2. Evil Twin - To Dare is To Lose One's IPA Momentarily. Not To Dare is To Lose Oneself. (Double Dry Hopped Triple IPA with Vanilla and Marshmallow, 10% ABV)

3. Vocation x Pomona Island - Double Snowball (Imperial Pastry Stout, 11.4% ABV)

4. Tartarus - Abaddon (Russian Imperial Stout, 17(SEVENTEEN)% ABV)

5. Deya - Routine Bites Hard (TIPA, 10% ABV)

At the risk of being chastised by you, DZ.

Have you ever had the chance to try and Everards Ales? I think they are based in Leicester and never seen their ales outside of the Midlands.

Tiger and Old Original is good. Never liked the sunchaser Ale personally.

I have had an Evarard ale, it was actually Tiger, their best bitter funnily enough! Was a while ago, though.

I remember it being decent

(Also, I'm not going to chastise you for mentioning trad beer from regional breweries!)

Went over to New Zealand a few years back and remembered them having some cracking IPA's. I can't remember hardly any of their names except one standout. Panhead was really good hence why I remember it. Particularly the Sandman (had like a multicoloured logo).

I really liked the Tui lager too, which they also add to a Ketchup over there 😂

Do you like fruity beers and ales DZ?

Got started on them when I was in Budapest and been getting right into them this summer and wonder if you have any suggestions.

Some of the best I've found so far at:

Früli (Fruit Beer) - Delerium

Blueberry Ale (Fruit Beer) - FIRST Craft Beer

Müggy (Fruit Beer) - Hubris

Cosmic Drop Berry Punch (Fruit Beer) - Beaverton (I know this one will be a bone of contention for you but it is nice).

Beer Cut With Mango (Fruit Beer) Jubel

Fresh Pulp (DDH NEIPA) - Brixton

Sun Sea & Juice (Tropical IPA) - Northern Monk

An excellent question.

I like *some* fruity beers is my honest answer. Fruli is a guilty pleasure of mine, as honestly it's not really beer, is it? They do a Lychee version too which is really nice. Great on a hot summer day.

I quite like lambics, Kriek Boon and Bacchus Kriekenbier are both nice and not too sour.

M&S do a cherry wheat beer I'm fond of which is brewed by Huyghe (who brew Fruli and Delirium.)

Speaking of Delirium, I'm a big fan of Delirium Red, too.

Going off fruited beers, I like beers that have fruity tastes - but only if it's from the hops used, I try to stay clear of adjuncts. Tiny Rebel are notorious for just flinging loads of fruit concentrate into their beers and calling it a day, for instance. Not for me, that. The Northern Monk one you mentioned I've not had - but given Northern Monk's propensity for using adjuncts it's probably more juice than hops. If they still do it, I'd recommend Vocation's Hop, Skip & Juice as a decent Tropical IPA.

I've had the Jubel beer you mentioned when they first went into supermarkets. Even though Mango is my preferred flavour in fruity beer I actually rated the Jubel cut with Elderflower higher on Untappd. I think the mango version was a bit too subtle.

Speaking of Mango, I quite like Blue Moon Mango Wheat Beer. Yes, even though it's from a Macro brewery, lol.

Edit - Just checked and yup, that Northern Monk beer is full of fruit juice, lol. Their supermarket beers often are!

Yeah the Northern Monk one was very juicy. I've not minded it too much in the heat like but you can definitely tell the difference to what has fruit juice added. I'll have a look at some of the others you've mentioned

Forgot a great one - Juice Forsyth from Brew York. I believe you can get it in Asda and Morrisons.

Rhubarbra Streisand is another good Brew York one, it's a pale ale but has a surprisingly decent body and tastes of Rhubarb & Custard boiled sweets.

Yeah Brew York are decent. Their stouts are on the weaker side mind (although their Rocky Road Ice Cream Impy stout collab with Tiny Rebel was excellent.)

IPA and Pale Ales is where they excel, the taproom is lovely too.
