"ChatGPT, make me a 15 minute presentation on suggested football tactics for a new manager, based around the strengths and weaknesses of the current Boro squad, designed to appeal to the known preferences of director of football Kieran Scott, Coach Adi Viveash and Owner Steve Gibson"

Literally 20 seconds and I've got the job!!
😁

Here is a structured outline for a 15-minute presentation on suggested tactics for Middlesbrough FC (Boro), designed with attention to what the director of football Kieran Scott, coach Adi Viveash and owner Steve Gibson will value. I’ll follow with slide suggestions and talking points.

Slide 1 – Title

“Tactical Framework for Boro: Leveraging the Squad, Aligning with Leadership Vision”

Your name/role

Date

Quick reminder of club context: Championship, promotion ambition

Slide 2 – Current Squad Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Market value: Boro’s squad is among the better-valued in the Championship (~€108m) which gives a solid base.

Key players:

Hayden Hackney at central midfield showing progressive passes and influence in attacking third.

Wing-backs contributing width: the analysis shows the club leading the league for through balls and take-ons, meaning attacking impetus from width is present.

Potential to overload central zones: recent tactics show narrow attacking midfielders freeing flank space.

Weaknesses

Depth issues: especially at wing-back (right side) and in striker positions. A review pointed this out as a priority. Vital Football

Defensive stability: centre-back options for three-man defence are somewhat limited; injury risk exists (for example, Darragh Lenihan’s past injuries).

Translating possession into points: a recent season review noted the squad “fell short” despite having decent talent. T

Slide 3 – Leadership Preferences & Alignment

Kieran Scott (Director of Football): reputation for data-driven recruitment, long-term planning.

Adi Viveash (Coach): likely to value clarity, structure, defined roles, player development.

Steve Gibson (Owner): wants promotion, return on investment, sustainable model, identity for the club.

Implications for tactics

We need a structure that provides clarity and development path for players (Viveash)

A system that uses recruitment data and squad value efficiently (Scott)

A plan that has genuine promotion potential and shows progress (Gibson)

Slide 4 – Proposed Tactical System: 3-4-2-1 / 3-4-1-2 Hybrid

Why this system suits Boro

Leverages strength in wing-backs and central overload in attack (width + central density)

Masks some defensive vulnerabilities by using three centre-backs thus reducing one-vs-one exposure

Offers flexibility: shift to 3-4-1-2 when we want more direct attacking support, or 3-4-2-1 when we want greater width from the two behind the striker

Basic structure

Three centre-backs (CB1, CB2, CB3)

Two wing-backs (WB left, WB right) who advance in attack, retreat in defence

Two central midfielders: one more disciplined (e.g., Hackney/ball-winner), one more advanced or linking

Two attacking midfielders/inside forwards or “accessors” behind the number-9

One lone striker (or two if shifting to 3-4-1-2)

Key tactical points

Wing-backs provide width, overlap or underlap into advanced positions

Attacking midfielders operate in the half-spaces, create overloads central and link play

Striker occupies central defenders, draws attention, allows movement from behind

In defence: compact mid-block, wing-backs drop to form five when out of possession

Slide 5 – Match-Phase Implementation

In possession

Build from back: three centre-backs plus one central midfielder create passing triangles.

Wing-backs push high and wide to stretch.

Attacking midfielders stay narrow initially to drag defenders in, then link with wing-backs or striker.

Striker acts as focal point and target when necessary – crosses, knock-downs.

Example: Use Hackney’s passing range to initiate attacks from central zone, combine with wing-back runs.

Out of possession

Mid-block from midfield line, centre-backs cover central channels, wing-backs drop into wide channels.

Force opponents wide where wing-backs or full-backs can challenge.

Upon regaining possession: quick repositioning into attacking transition, exploiting wing-back space.

Emphasise pressing triggers (when opponent carries into certain zones) to regain high up.

Slide 6 – Phases of the Season: Short-Term & Medium-Term

Short-Term (First 6–10 matches)

Establish core structure, focus on defensive organisation (reduce big errors)

Define player roles, especially wing-backs and attacking midfielders

Prioritise results to build momentum, aligning with Gibson’s expectation of progress

Use data/analytics to optimise selection and recruitment choices (Scott’s domain)

Medium-Term (Mid-season onwards)

Introduce tactical variations: e.g., 3-4-1-2 when facing teams that crowd midfield or struggle with two up front

Integrate younger players or new recruits who fit the system – development angle (Viveash)

Adapt opposition-specific adjustments: if we concede from wide overloads, shift wing-backs deeper or move to 4-2-3-1 temporarily

Slide 7 – Recruitment & Squad Optimisation

Prioritise:

A right wing-back with pace and stamina (current options limited)

A left-footed centre-back to balance three-man defence

A striker with consistent fitness and goal record (current depth risk)

A midfield “destroyer” or ball-winner to complement Hackney’s advanced role

Use market value insights: we are ~€108m in squad value, competitive but still need smart recruitment. Hartlepool Mail+1

Monitor injury vulnerability: ensure backups for key wing-back and central positions

Data-led player profiling: matches Scott’s approach, ensures alignment with club strategy

Slide 8 – Key Performance Indicators & Metrics

Pressing efficiency: number of turnovers in final third

Wing-back contributions: assists, progressive carries, defensive recoveries

Central overload effectiveness: chances created in half-spaces, final third passes

Defensive solidity: goals conceded from wide areas, number of defensive errors leading to shots

Conversion rate: xG vs goals scored, particularly for striker and attacking midfielders

Slide 9 – Risks & Mitigations

Risk: Wing-back fatigue or injury → Mitigation: rotate wing-backs, train transitional defensive shape

Risk: Three-man defence lacking one-on-one pace → Mitigation: select quicker centre-back or drop wing-back deeper in certain matches

Risk: Over-reliance on a few key players (e.g., Hackney) → Mitigation: develop secondary players and relieve load

Risk: Opponents nullifying our central overloads → Mitigation: switch to wider formation or alternative attacking patterns (e.g., 3-5-2)

Slide 10 – Summary & Next Steps

The proposed 3-4-2-1 / 3-4-1-2 system leverages Boro’s squad strengths and addresses weaknesses

It aligns with leadership expectations: structured yet progressive, development-friendly, promotion-oriented

Next steps:

Pre-season: install structure, assign roles

Early season: monitor metrics, adjust formation as needed

Mid-season: recruit targeted players, implement tactical variation

Monthly reviews: use data with Scott’s team, feed into training with Viveash

We need to collectively do everything possible to ensure this doesn’t end up in Woody’s hands.

Not doubting info likes of @diggerlad07 and @Bristol_Boro have posted on here is what they been told about Wicky now being selected for the job but i find it odd likes of Echo, Downie, Lyall Thomas etc. The usual suspects have not reported anything.

I know Percy reported yesterday he was a strong contender but thought if info has been leaked somewhere that we now identified Wacky as chosen one then that this info has not been fed to the usual sources in media.

It could be just a slight delay given its International weekend so who knows

I would expect them to have been asked to delay so as to allow Boro to square things off.

We are a small community club really and a few people know a few people who know what is going on. In my opinion I would expect something more tomorrow from the Echo especially.

It's also a Sunday on an international break. Craig Johns is on holiday and Scott Wilson is following England, so probably won't hear anything until tomorrow
