I think people think far too deeply about managers, does it really matter if Gerrard has less than desirable family members or if Gary O'Neil once got a yellow card at the end of the season?

Obviously not if they're successful, but I doubt there are many people who dislike them for those reasons, think they'd be a success, but don't want them anyway.

I imagine most are like me with O'Neil, I don't think he'd be a good manager here and the fact he's a selfish *** makes me want him even less.

slippy g, just had a google apparently his daughters with a son of a irish gangster, and they a few other news articles about stevie having people from similar worlds helping him out of bother from other gangs too.

Taking the Rangers job with an Irish gangster in the family wont have gone down well

Rare you get such contrasting narratives -

EG - Gibson is scrambling to appoint someone in the coming days.

NE - Boro won't rush an appointment, and will take as much time as they need.

Gazette pretty much saying it’s between Gerrard and Carrick with an announcement expected before the Oxford game.

That's not Craig Johns, it's some randomer from Exeter pumping out content whilst he's on holiday, he won't know anything.

I really can’t believe reappointing Carrick is under serious consideration.

What can he have possibly done in the 5 months since we sacked him to merit consideration.

And how weird would that be for the squad with half of them having just played under him and half of them not knowing him at all.

I know it’s only the Gazette but so strange age why they keep banging on about him. Then again there was an article from Paylor, yesterday I think, that said it’s a shame Dyche took the Forest job as he would have been perfect for us. Don’t know what level of reality he’s living on.

I don't want success at any price. It's possible to be successful and to achieve and fulfil objectives while retaining standards. I don't want O'Neil, Gerrard or Carrick but out of the three I'd choose Carrick 100 times before the other two. The likelihood of success between all three doesn't differ greatly in my mind but I'd rather not associate with the other two or be associated in any way, even just as a supporter of the Club.

Like in any Industry an employer should do a thorough background check on any potential future employees, especially ones in key positions so the reputation of the business and operating efficiency doesn't become compromised by something that later shows up, placing them in an entirely avoidable scenario.

the gazette post is pure opinion. take it with as much credability as any randoms sites lists

it also says there is a quote from Steve Gibson why he could re-appoint Carrick, and I can't even see one, but there is a link on that which is meant to take you to the quote and it links to don Hutchinson saying he thinks he would come back on a podcast/interview.

I'd defs go with what the echo said over that by 500% as they will be speaking to people to see what's happening.

We don't need to rush if we keep getting results, part of me wonders if there maybe trying to see if Adi gets the bug like Leo seemed to do when he had his run. But also we didn't really rush too much to replace Wilder either, I think sometimes the people coming in want to make sure everything is right for them and take a little time with it as much as we do.

In our club's history, have we ever reappointed a former Boro manager? (Excluding caretakers, obvs).

only as assistant's (woodgate) / and caretakers according to ai search results.

Quote

The following managers have had more than one non-consecutive spell in permanent or caretaker charge of Middlesbrough FC:

Jack Charlton had two separate spells:

May 1973 to April 1977

March 1984 to June 1984 (caretaker role)

Bryan Robson had a continuous tenure as manager but worked alongside an assistant/head coach (Terry Venables) during a portion of it:

June 1994 to December 2000 (initially as player-manager)

He remained as manager when Terry Venables was brought in as head coach from December 2000 to June 2001, effectively a joint management arrangement to see out the season.

Steve Agnew had two brief caretaker spells:

October 2010 (2 matches)

March 2017 to June 2017 (11 matches)

Leo Percovich had two brief spells as caretaker manager:

October 2022 (5 matches)

He also served on the backroom staff under Jonathan Woodgate.

Other individuals, such as Harold Shepherdson and Craig Liddle, had single caretaker spells, while Mark Venus and Colin Cooper also had very brief caretaker roles. Bryan Robson's time is often considered a single long tenure, albeit with an adjustment in the coaching structure during the final months.

it's against near enough all manager trends, apart from recently with the odd exception have looked there because I think they had few other ideas or options (and they were most likely still on the payroll so a saving to be made from employing someone new - lets face it the sheff utd owners are not the most expirenced and probs thought it was an easy fix to reverse things).

I don't think Carrick would come back, he don't come across like some where you feel they need to manage because they can't walk away from having a role in football. He seems quite happy to not take a job and just do what he wants. He's a man of principle and don't think being away 6 months will have changed anything for him.

Wouldn't be against it, but then I would be behind anyone until it was clear it was fk'd and not going to work at all with no signs of progression.

Ole tho seem's like who I would pick out of people who have no jobs and may be open to come here. He seems like a nice genuine likable guy, seems very reasonable with his expectations and one I feel would be more than willing to work in the modern director of football setup. I think he would have decent pull when talking to younger players coming here as well. I think he would be a great fit if he can get his head around this league. Think it would be daft not to at least ask him to be interviewed. He seems like the right sort of character you want when things are going well, but also when things are going wrong because I don't think he would get overly aggressive and maybe fracture things like maybe Gerrard could have in him if he is meant to be a moody manager. Moody managers are typically more old school and probs not going to fit with an existing setup, or that's my perception of them anyways. We need someone who can take the rough with the smooth and be prepared to make good with what ever happens in the transfer market as a lot of our outgoings are simply out of our control and we also seem like we are not prepared to take some dead end short cuts that have no value in the long run. Who ever our manager is needs to accept that and work with it, because its inevitable.

I'm not saying we need to rush in to a decision, but it would have been nice for the new manager to have this international break to work with the players.

maybe the man they want is already working with the players, he just hasn't realised it yet or been convinced yet :classic_wink:

I don't think so. But Carrick's problems started after Danks left. With Adi in position now and, if Carrick was to agree that the club ultimately told him what players were coming in and leaving, it might just work. Personally I don't want him to come back. And definitely not Stevie G!!
