I have little sympathy for Greg Clarke or the majority of those who run the FA. However he was variously referred to as an "old fogey", an "elderly old fart", and an "old gadgie". Posters also made assumptions as to why he made those comments based purely on his age and upbringing. Now you can see how easy it is to fall into any sort of discriminatory actions based on stereotypical assumptions. We all unconsciously do it.

At least two of those were by Rioja who is basically the same age so feels able to use terms like that.

Also I don't think pointing out that as he is older and therefore grew up in a different environment is discriminatory. Surely that's just a fact?

No, we just read what people write.

It was me who called him an "old Gadgie" and an "old Fart", because I am one myself. There was nothing subconscious about it, it was entirely deliberate as we both fall into the Sexagenarian bracket. Self deprecating humour from one old Gadgie to another isn't the same as ageism, racism, sexism or being homophobic.

Some good points there.

I think the worst the old boy was guilty of was just being out of touch with the modern game and currently acceptable language.

Unfortunately digging yourself into a hole is one of those things you can do when you panic...which is probably what he did, trying to justify his earlier comments.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is quite typical of the FA's senior management. When you put that together with their general ineptness, I agree it would be good if they could get someone younger, more in touch and with the energy & intent to change the game for the better, rather than just occupying a seat round the table. In fact, a full clearout might be not be a bad idea.

I just find it a bit cringy and distasteful when the media and various talking heads jump on the racism bandwagon and demand resignations whenever people make what I'd call an honest mistake (as opposed to fans doing monkey chants or throwing bananas on the pitch).

They're so obsessed with political correctness that they can't get their heads around the fact some people - particularly older folks - may be prone to using outdated language.

Anyway, its the right outcome, but for a very unfortunate reason IMO.

My wife has referred to people as colour and I rightly pointed out regardless she is Asian or not she should refrain from doing so in future. She laughed at me.
