We had an abundance of attacking talent at that time. We also had a brilliant goalkeeper and a solid defence. We were also playing against teams who were not infinitely better than us. It’s not even a remotely similar situation Brad Jones was in nets for us 😂😂

An abundance of attacking talent that was substituted onto the pitch, Mclaren took a risk and made positive attacking changes. On today's showing Belgium were not infinitely better than us. I'm simply imposing your logic onto a situation that is similar.

We were 2-0 down starting at the Riverside against Basel. Went 1-0 down and scored before halftime. Then we beat them late in the second half. Not the same as being 3-0 down in a single game. Steau we were also behind coming to the Riverside and again won it late. We could have got thumped in either game but it worked out for us. We remember these games because it is far more rare to win from behind than to get hammered when you open up and go for it
smogsterking the Inspirati 2,487
You could argue we were in a nothing to lose position at half time. We can't get relegated but to stay in the hunt to qualify for the latter stages we needed to win. I think we could have sacrificed one of our defence minded players given they were handling Lukaku pretty well.

We were level in the home game against Basel at half-time, so we needed to make changes to win the game, let alone remembering the aggregate score. Then the Steaua game we were behind 2-1 at half time against just to win that leg we needed to make changes to win the game. You are conveniently forgetting that we didn't get thumped in either game, but I suppose that doesn't fit your narrative either.
Old Codger 3,063
It could also be said that Belgium played as well as they needed to and didn't feel the need to really turn it on... we have a bunch of good forwards and a couple of very good midfielders, but the defence just doesn't inspire me with confidence when they are faced with top opposition.... Usually friendlies see both sides make multiple subs, but Martinez was satisfied with one, bit disappointed that their number 16 wasn't used, just to see how the commentators would handle his name. Probably want to save them for the big match on Wednesday

DanFromDownSouth 1,706
On a different note, has anyone seen the list of player Liverpool now have out injured? Trent, Gomez, VVD, Robertson*, Fabinho, Tsimikas, Thiago, Henderson*, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Salah. * Potentially injured

I always approach the international break like "oh it will give my injured players time to recover" and ALWAYS come out the other end with double the problems I originally had! 1

I kind of understand that point of view in a league situation, were goal difference matters. But on both instances we are effectively looking at knockout football, so conceding more is kind of a mute point.
