Smogzilla 7,385
Think our deal with 32 red runs out at the end of this season so hopefully we move away from a gambling sponsor regardless of legislation.

If they're not banned, I doubt it. There's a reason we all have them, they offer the most money and we need money now more than ever.
Neverbefore 10,695
Good news overall, bad news for us. Well never find a sponsor to match what we would get from a gambling company at this level.

RiseAgainst 3,777
I've always refused to wear a Boro shirt with a gambling sponsor's logo on it, because I hate what gambling does to people (including a good friend of mine) and I refuse to advertise it on my clothing. It might be to the detriment of MFC's finances if either gambling sponsorship is banned or 32Red GTF next season, but it'll be to the benefit of society as a whole and fans in particular not to be walking adverts for casinos and bookies. Are there any Teesside-based businesses big enough to be potential shirt sponsors? (other than Bulkhaul, obvs).

Not every club. Most clubs in the championship yes but premier League clubs can attract huge sponsorship deals from non gambling companies due to their exposure. The gap just gets bigger. Stainton Steel, but I'd imagine if they were interested they'd have sponsored us a while ago. Wasn't there a rumour Jaguar were going to sponsor us previously? Gibson has some links with them I seem to remember.

That'd mean our shirt sponsors went from gambling to pawnbrokers to gambling to pawnbrokers. All we'd be missing is a local abbatoir or a knocking shop.
Denzel Zanzibar 6,931
Good news, although you just know clubs will get round it by having gambling companies sponsor the stadium or the team instead. Why can't Bulkhaul sponsor us? If Derby can play fast and loose with sponsorship rules why shouldn't we?

Perhaps because they're not a consumer facing business, and commercial contracts are (a) limited in number and (b) not chosen based on advertising. People watching Boro play are unlikely to think "ooh, I really fancy sending some freight to China", whereas if we were sponsored by Three Brothers Brewing Co, people would subconsciously start to fancy a pint. I want a pint now, actually. Mmm...beer...

Let’s say it’s £5m a year. If you find an external sponsor that adds another amount into clubs income, say £1m a year. So we get £6m in total. . If .Bulkhaul sponsors the club, it’s Gibsons money, so part of the £5m total that he’s willing to put in. Add to that the fact that he only owns 75[?]% of Bulkhaul, so would need to get partner to agree, plus league would likely crawl over Bulkhaul sponsorship as it is not a company selling to consumers, so the advertising would not really help its business.
Old Codger 3,039
Just had a vision of Derby running out in Granny Whiplash shirts. In an ideal world, there would be enough cash floating around for people to have options.. but in times like this I would rather see no sponsor than a dodgy one.. wonder if we will ever get to the stage where we will see a sponsor of the month , though that is probably a shirt collectors nightmare

I still fundamentally agree with taking gambling companies off shirts but you have to wonder what comes next if we don't get promoted. I notice somebody had said in the comments of the tweet that may or may not come to anything. Clubs putting betting sponsors on their adult shirts kind of opens the door a bit more for charities to be placed on the child shirts, something we did last season at least. I'd say that they could probably still afford to do that but if the biggest offers after 32Red for us is a company that demands to be placed as the main sponsor on a kids shirt too, will we turn that down? I can't imagine we would. Though we haven't got any sponsor on the kid's shirt this season so who knows if that even remotely makes a different for us. For some, it might though. smogsterking the Inspirati 2,453
I'd love a sponsor-less shirt mind i liked the one a few seasons ago that didn't have a sponsor on it. I think if it did come into fruition no betting sites on shirts. My prediction is they will try the monthly sponsors again and Manjaros will at some point be one of the sponsors.
