U21's vs. Hull (H) Tues 4th Sept - Match Report (Friendly)

Recommended Posts

Due to being the odd side out in the 7 team Development league Middlesbrough took advantage of the free week to play a friendly at Rockliffe vs. Hull City.

The timing couldn’t have been better for striker Lukas Jutkiewicz who was returning from a pre season knee injury which meant he has seen no playing time so far this season.

Middlesbrough lined up in a rather unfamiliar 4-4-2 formation. Jutkiewicz partnered up front by Charlie Wyke. Fringe first teamers Cameron Park and Luke Williams both started. Christian Burgess, a new signing this summer who was on trial at the latter end of 2011/12 season was given the captains armband.

Jayson Leutwiler in the Boro goal made a good save early on when the ball bounced awkwardly just in front of him, he managed to get his body in front of the ball and block before collecting well.

Jutkiewicz looked sharp making cutting runs across the Hull defence and was unlucky when he broke into the box to have his shot blocked. Matthew Waters linked up well with Wyke as he advanced towards the goal, playing a one-two with the front man before receiving the ball back on the edge of the box, but Waters strike was straight at the keeper.

Boro took the lead shortly after, Lewis Sirrell just kept the ball in on the left and passed sideways to Burgess who picked out the agile Luke Williams, he dragged the ball back and moved into space and slid a perfectly weighted slide pass through the Hull defence straight into the path of Jutkiewicz who touched the ball past the keeper with his right foot and tapped in with his left.

GOAL BORO – Jutkiewicz 1-0

Hull could have hit back quickly but an inch perfect cross was wasted by the Hull number 9 as he timed his header wrongly.

The game was end to end with the ball moving quickly, Charlie Wyke was played in well by the impressive Luke Williams, but his touch saw him lose momentum, as he regained the ball he looked up and tried to float the ball over the Hull keeper from 25 yards but the Keeper got a strong hand to the ball and tipped it over.

Williams himself had a great chance to double the hosts lead when the Hull number 6 miss controlled the ball in the box, Williams ran onto the ball and tried to toe the ball past the advancing keeper only to see his effort saved by the keepers legs.

Half Time – Middlesbrough 1 Hull 0

BORO SUB – Jutkiewicz off, Kneeshaw on.

Both sides had early chances Wyke went close for Middlesbrough and Leutwiler saved Boro when everyone seemed to stop waiting for an offside decision that didn’t arrive. The big Swiss keeper saved well low down.

BORO SUB – Rivers off, Brobbel on.

Leutwiler was again called into action when Okosieme failed to control the ball, the Hull number 9 streaked clear only the keeper to beat but Leutwiler stood tall and saved well.

BORO SUB – Park Off, Dolan on.

BORO SUB – Okosieme off (inj), Oliver on.

Bruno Pilatos had a strong game on the right flank for Boro offering himself for the long diagonal and always willing to chase, he managed to get forward and cut inside from the right but pulled his shot wide of the Hull goal.

BORO SUB – Wyke off, Edwards on.

Matthew Dolan, who scored a scorcher against Palace in the U21 opener nearly did the same when he struck the ball goal wards from all of 35 yards, the Hull keeper though managed to tip the ball over.

Full Time – Middlesbrough 1 Hull 0.

Boro: Leutwiler, Pilatos, Sirrell, Waters, Okosieme Oliver), Burgess ©, Rivers (Brobbel), Williams, Jutkiewicz (Kneeshaw), Wyke (Edwards), Park (Dolan).

Hull: oxley toppy cooper townsend mcelroy emerton stewart wilson mccaffery devitt margitts

Again people need to remember this was a friendly game, it was used to give some fringe first teamers some minutes whilst also keeping the U21s match fit.

Christian Burgess, who was given the captains armband had a good game, strong in the tackle and vocal in defence. Williams was clever in his use of the ball and linked well with Jutkiewicz. But the player who impressed me the most was goal keeper Jayson Leutwiler, he was strong in the air, safe in the save and was impressive in the way he spoke to his team mates.

Thanks Powlay.

I'm delighted that Jayson is coming on well. He looked absolutely terrified when he came out for the warm up at Billingham. I was also a bit concerned that he was left to his own devices sat in the crowd at S***horpe when Jason and Conner had a half apiece

Sorry to note that Okosieme was injured. I was impressed with his heading at Bishops, so much better than last year. He really could turn out to be a defensive collosus with his height and the ability to get up and get some power on a header.
