U18's vs. Fulham (H) Sat 15th Sept - Match Report

Recommended Posts

It was a beautiful day at Rockliffe for the visit of U18 champions Fulham, you could see instantly from the warm ups the difference between the sides physically. Fulham with strong filled out players compared to the slighter Boro players.

Fulham from the whistle were straight at Middlesbrough, quick passing and movement and a ball down the Boro left was flicked by Cauley Woodrow to Muamer Tankovic who cut inside, he laid the ball wide to the left where George Williams awaited and as it came in Woodrow buried it in the net to make it 0-1 Fulham.

GOAL FULHAM – 0-1

It soon could have been two after poor Boro defending gifted the ball to Fulham in a dangerous position a run by Woodrow was picked out well by Tankovic and the Fulham forward finished well but the linesman raised his flag for offside.

It was all Fulham at this stage, Boro struggling to find outlets to pass to and not keeping possession of the ball meant the defense were very deep. Tankovic, nicknamed Tank and physically looking like one picked the ball up and struck it from distance, Coddington was full stretch to his right to see the ball rebound to safety off the bottom of the post.

In a swift counter Middlesbrough had their first half chance when captain Jordan Jones did a little step and dropped his shoulder leaving his marker in the dust, the finish though wasn’t as composed and he pulled his shot wise of Max Oberschmidt’s goal.

There were arms raised in the Boro back line as Fulham doubled their lead. Jones lost the ball in midfield and as Fulham attacked it came out to the left where George Williams was just outside the box, he curled it in and with two Fulham players directly in front of the keeper trying and failing to get a touch the ball went in at the far post. The linesman’s flag stayed down and the referee signaled for a goal.*

GOAL FULHAM – 0-2

Fulham were on the rampage and quickly hit a 3rd, Liam Donnelly at right back sent over a deep cross which was headed back in the direction it came from to Woodrow who looked offside, he didn’t pause though and put it into the net. The Boro players protested by the lineman again said ‘no offside’ and the goal stood.

GOAL FULHAM 0-3

Fulham's dominance continued with a Tankovic snapshot rebounding off the Boro bar. And they did it again moments later when a cross from the left back was met on the volley by Woodrow who saw his effort rebound off the post.

Boro Sub – Armstrong off, Boagey on.

Woodrow wasn’t to be stopped though, he pounced on a loose ball in the Boro box and completed a first half hat trick. Game over before half time.

GOAL FULHAM – 0-4

Half Time Middlesbrough 0 Fulham 4

Fulham again came out flying, Luke Coddington acrobatically tipped over a strike from Woodrow and from the corner the ball was headed towards the back post and as it came down Josh Passley struck it on the volley for the goal of the game!

GOAL FULHAM – 0-5

Fulham’s giant centre half Stephen Arthurworry nearly got his name on the score sheet, a header from a corner was cleared by Jones and then the same player went on a mazy run past Morris and into the heart of the Boro box before his shot was well tipped over by Coddington.

Boro Sub – Coleby off, Stephen O’Neill on.

Coddington had to be at his best to keep the score line down, he saved well low to his left and then again brilliantly to parry the ball wide from a Tankovic drive.

Totally against the run of play Boro had a chance, 1st year Priestly Griffiths played a long ball into space on the wide Boro right, Fewster put on the after burners and got to the ball first before cutting into the box and being brought down by Solomon Sambu for a penalty. Fewster himself stepped up to take the kick and went low and hard down the middle the keeper went right and nearly saved it with his feet but Boro had their consolation.

GOAL BORO – Fewster (pen) 1-5

Boro Sub – Warnett off, Garrity on.

Full Time – Middlesbrough 1 Fulham 5.

Boro – Coddington, Tinkler, Kitching, Morris, Griffiths, Weledji, Coleby (O’Neill 60), Jones ©, McCarthy (Boagey 41), Fewster, Warnett (Garrity 78)

Unused - Bland, Armstrong

Fulham: Oberschmidt, Donnelly, Evans (Richards 69), Passley, Arthurworrey (O'Reilly 69), Sambou, Roberts (Tieku 69), Della Verde, Woodrow, Tankovic, Williams.

Unused - Bunting,O'Hallaran

Note *If the players in front of the keeper were going for the ball then they are active and are clearly offside.

Man of the Match & Thoughts

Fulham’s Cauley Woodrow.

Think it’s the first time ever I’ve given the MOTM award to an opposition player but it would be wrong not to. A 1st half hat trick, the defenders could cope with his movement and power. Fulham were a pleasure to watch in a way, their passing, their movement and the clinical finishing. The young Boro side hopefully will learn a lot from the game. It was men against boys physically. The Boro players slight in stature the Fulham players easily mistaken for grown men.

Powlay. From what youuve seen so far has the new accademy system improved the standard of teams we are playing against

Well its very early doors, you have to say yes. We would maybe get one game against man utd or liverpool a season before whilst playing home and away at sheff wed, sheff utd, huddersfield, sunerland, newcastyle, leeds etc.

Now its home and away vs chelsea (FA youth cup winners), Fulham (U18 league champions), Man City, Wolves, Palace and Liverpool. Even if we come low out of the group we will have more games against different sides so in theory yeah we play better teams it helps the players more.
