U18's vs. Newcastle (A) Wed 10th Apr - Match report

Recommended Posts

Middlesbrough travelled to neighbours Newcastle buoyant after a fantastic win with 10 men vs. Blackburn at the weekend. Hat trick hero from that match, Dylan McGlade was not involved.

The starting side was similar to that of Saturday the only changes were Jordan Jones in for Thomas McAloon, who switched to the bench and Robbie Tinkler coming in for Jonathan Coleby.

Boro set up in a diamond formation, Jones at the tip and Priestly Griffiths at the base with Tinkler on the right and Kitching on the left. Up front U16 Junior Mondal (known also as Lewis Scoble) started his 2nd game on the bounce alongside Jimmy Warnett. Keiza Weledji captained the side and started alongside Jonny Burn who received a red card vs. Blackburn. U16 Jonathan Helm again started at right back becoming the most used U16 this season and Ross McNab remained at left back. Joe Fryer continued in goal.

Newcastle started quickly forcing an early free kick, as the ball came in Fryer punched clear for another corner. As the corner came in Fryer again was forced into punching clear.

Jordan Jones had Boro’s first effort on goal driving an effort straight at Freddie Woodman after a neat one two.

Jones again was at the centre of the forward movement, he linked up with Griffiths on the left and cut in past his man the attack came to nothing though when Jones miss-controlled the cross.

Jimmy Warnett came in to the middle and a quick move to the right found space, he ran forward then moved the ball to Tinkler who flicked the ball past his man before being brought down for a penalty. Jones stepped up confidently and put the keeper the wrong way to give the Teessiders the lead 1-0

GOAL BORO! Jones (Penalty) 1-0

Boro were straight back on the attack, Junior Mondal blew past his man with a great turn his low cross was met on the full by Jordan Jones but the defence got the block in.

Alex Kitchen found himself in the referee’s book after a cynical challenge on the cutting Jones. From the resulting free kick Priestley Griffiths struck the ball well over the bar.

The weather was clear to all; Colin Cooper couldn’t handle the cold and was seen in tracksuit bottoms.

Boro had other chances, JimmyWarnett struck wide from 25 yards, a poorly worked free kick came back outside the box to Warnett who flighted the ball in and new signing Jonny Burn blasted over.

Newcastle Sub – Jonathan Quinn off, Dan Barlaser on.

Newcastle came close to levelling things up, an in swinging corner caused Fryer to stretch full length to tip the ball over. Then from the resulting corner the ball was headed by a defender onto the bar. From that corner Fryer got down fantastically to make a low save before bouncing back to his feet and saving the rebound superbly.

Straight from that attack the ball was played out to Kitching who flowed down the left before knocking the ball past the defender, as he went to speed past him he was scythed down. Defender Jamie Sterry received a yellow for the tackle.

Jones nearly doubled the visitors lead when a corner was cleared to the edge of the box. Jones was waiting and his volley looked like it was going into the corner before the man on the line did what he was there for and cleared to safety.

It was all Boro at this time, flowing passing play down the left between Jones, McNab and Kitching saw Boro cut into the box. The ball fell to Junior Mondal but his strike was blocked before getting to the keeper.

Boro did manage to double their lead just before half time, Warnett found Jones on the edge of the box and he struck the ball cleanly across the keeper into the opposite corner.

GOAL BORO - Jones 2-0

Jones had time to pull out a few Ronaldo’esque tricks on the left side before beating his man and driving the cross in.

Boro probably should have had a 3rd goal, Jones flicked the ball to Warnett who was breaking into the box from the right side his strike though let him down and it remained 2-0 at the half.

Half Time Newcastle 0 Middlesbrough 2 (Jones x2)

Newcastle Sub – Alex Kitchen off, Andy Hall on.

Newcastle Sub – Rolando Aarons off, Macauley Booth on.

Boro started the 2nd half like they ended the 1st half…in control Delightful passing moves cutting through the opposition.

Fryer really didn’t have a lot to do but remained aware and saved well after a miss hit cross flew towards the Boro stoppers near post.

Boro had their 3rd when the ball came cross the pitch from the left to Jones who opened his body and hit the ball with slice into the top corner of the net completing his hat trick.

GOAL BORO – Jones 3-0

A well worked corner saw Priestly Griffiths break into the box, he cut back onto his left and his save was parried by Woodman. Junior Mondal managed to get to the rebound first but under pressure shot wide.

Boro Sub – Jones off, Tom McAloon on.

Junior Mondal went closer with his next effort. A deep Mark Kitching cross was met well by Tinkler and his head down bounced high. Mondal got there first and his header hit the bar.

Boro Sub – Warnett off, Armstrong on.

Boro Sub – Griffiths off, Joe Wheatley on.

U16 Joe Wheatley entered the fray making his first U18 appearance and looking very composed in the process.

Ross McNab set up the next attack for Boro, bursting forward from left back before delivering a deep cross to the back post. Robbie Tinkler found himself open and caught the ball on the volley, Tinkler controlled the volley superbly back across the keeper and into the far corner of the net!

GOAL BORO – Tinkler 4-0

Newcastle nearly got a consolation, a floated header was amazingly saved by Fryer who was at full stretch to get his hand to the ball.

Thoughts/Man of the Match.

Firstly, you can only beat what’s put in front of you. And today Boro did that with style, they were fantastic as a team pushing forward. As usual it’s often hard to pick one a single player. Well done to Joe Fryer on the clean sheet. Some very good agile saves kept Boro ahead at important times.

The defensive unit again was very strong. Weledji and Burn really were rock solid. McNab and Helm supporting through overlapping. McNab with an assist and Helm time after time pushed the left midfielder of Newcastle back towards his own box.

Griffiths was impressive, not only shielding the defence but distributing the ball well and was unfortunate that he didn’t score. Tinkler was solid and capped off his performance with a superbly well taken goal. Kitching was athletic, breaking down the left time and time again. Impressively linking up with others and slicing into the Newcastle box.

Warnett was a live wire and like fellow front man Junior Mondal will be unhappy he didn’t manage to get on the score sheet.

Joe Wheatley on his debut was impresive, always quick to close his man down and his pasing was simple and creative.

But Man of the Match has to go to Jordan Jones. Consistently a thorn in any team’s side, he was at his best today moving wide to offer an outlet, then running past his man with ease. Took both his open play goals fantastically well. And could have had a few others had luck been on his side. With Mowbray talking about playing youth it’s hard to look past a player that fans would instantly take to their heart for his Juninho like ability.

He has a habit of committing his man into tackles then moving past them, at a higher level he may not be as effective but he has the talent and the potential to be a danger at the highest level.

"Juninho like ability"....I love him already from that description.

I know it's a hard one to answer but do you think he has the same potential as the likes of Morrison, Downing etc did at his age?.

I dunno I didn't really see either regularly at u18 level.

He is a talent, from my description late in the match report you can see he is a player I'm not sitting on te fence and being candid about.

That says it all, I don't usually say much about players but hes an exception

Yeah I noticed you were more candid about him than some others, especially daring to put Juninho in the same sentence as him got me excited lol.

There were a few glimpses against Hastings of him drifting with the fall at his feet which stood out right away. Hopefully he fulfills his potential as he sounds like a type of unique player that there isn't too many of.
