2013 Confederations Cup PL - Quarter-Finals, Rules, Fixtures & Predictions

2013 Confederations Cup PL

Quarter-Finals

Down to the business end of the tournament now, as our 8 remaining Quarter-Finalists battle it out for a Semi-Final spot. A mixture of pre-tournament favourites and rank outsiders have left us with some interesting ties. Could a few more upsets be on the cards? May I remind you that all predictions are required by 7pm Wednesday 26th and the rules are a little different at this stage. On top of that, the prediction requirements for those who progress to the PL Semi-Finals will be to predict on the CC Third-Place Final fixture, with just the PL Finalists themselves predicting on the CC Final. All will be explained.

PL Quarter-Final Fixtures

Fixture 1: 2plus2 (P) (26) vs Jamesp (P) (22).

Our first QF match up sees two predictors line up in a fixture that few could have forseen before the tournament kicked off. The 68/1 outsider takes on the 100/1 underdog in a tie that will somehow leave one of these competitors one fixture away from the final. The bookies have Jamesp down as the narrow favourite to progress, yet still as only 15/1 to win the tournament. Game on.

Fixture 2: Borodane (P) (1) vs Smogsterking the Inspiration (P) (27).

It wasn't easy in the end, but Borodane lived up to all the hype and expectations, doing just enough to secure a place at this late stage. Smogsterking, on the other hand, was somehow left out of all the pre-tournament odds altogether. It's the number one vs the biggest outsider the tournament has to offer. The Dane vs the Smog. David vs Goliath. Usain Bolt vs Rik Waller. We could be in for a cricket score.

Fixture 3: Treknut (P) (2) vs Tanksie (P) (15).

Treknut's odds have decreased to 3/1; a sign of his relative PL dominance for several years now. Tanksie too has had his odds slashed, from 25/1 to 10/1. But it is by virtue of his tough fixture that his odds aren't greater. Beam me up Scotty. Treknut is likely to breach the rules of space and time and transport himself to the next round. But Tanksie, as always, means war.

Fixture 4: AlanFromBoro (P) (24) vs Boroboy1980 (P) (21).

Another tie that sees two huge underdogs pit against each other in a fight to the death. But both defeated some PL celebrities to get here and must not be overlooked. Like the rest of the field, neither are expected to test the dominant figures of Borodane and Treknut. Yet both, alongside 4 and James, will be lifted by the fact that they cannot face either of the favourites until the Final itself. Boroboy1980 is a big favourite in this individual tie though, with Alan being only given 6/1 odds to progress. But this is the beautiful game, and both have shown a willingness to attack. The bookies expect goals. And lots of them.

Prediction Rules

So, this is how it works. The accumulated points from the first 3 prediction options in both CC Semi-Finals combined will decide who progresses. If there is a winner, then options 4, 5 and 6 are not needed. But if predictors cannot be separated, then there is PL extra time based on any CC extra times to decide a winner (option 4). If predictors still cannot be separated, then there is a PL penalty shoot out based on any CC penalty shoot outs to decide a winner (option 5). And, if there is still not a victor, then a variety of additional factors will decide who will progress (option 6). Also, it must be mentioned that if neither of the CC Quarter-Final fixtures themselves go to extra time or beyond, then those latter factors (4 and 5) will not be able to come into play. So, it is possible that we could have a tie from prediction results from the first 3 options, and have to skip straight to the option 6 decisive factors.

Let's break it down..

(Option 1) Exact Full Time Scoreline

You receive 1 point for the correct 90 min basic result and 1 point for the correct 90 min exact scoreline.

(Option 2) Two Goalscorers

You receive 1 point for each goal that one of your chosen goalscorers scores, not including penalty shoot out goals. You cannot predict 'no scorer'. You cannot put one goalscorer x2. And you can only predict 'own goal' if you specify the name of the player to score it, but, though it's totally up to you, I wouldn't recommend it!

(Option 3) Exact Half Time Scoreline

You receive 1 point for the correct basic half time score (ie. who is winning or drawing) and 1 point for the correct exact scoreline

(Option 4) Extra Time Victor

You receive 1 point for being correct. You must predict the name of the team to win this extra-time. If you wish, you can predict a draw for this 30 minutes of play. You cannot predict 'will not go to extra time' as if this is the case this prediction option will be null and void anyway.

(Option 5) Penalty Shoot Out Victor

You must predict the name of the team to win the penalty shoot-out. You cannot predict 'will not go to penalties' as if this is the case this prediction option will again be null and void anyway.

(Option 6) Final Decisive Factors

If we somehow get to this stage, the victor will be based on who scored the greatest number of points from the individual prediction factors one by one in a specific order. So, who outscored who in option 1 from fixture 1. Then, if there isn't a winner, who outscored who in option 1 from fixture 2. And then, if need be, who outscored who in option 2 from fixture 1. Then option 2 from fixture 2. Then option 3 from fixture 1. And, finally, option 3 from fixture 2. If somehow predictors still cannot be separated from 1 of those 6 factors, then we will go to count-back, ie. who outscored who in the group stage. But I highly doubt we'll need to go there and I hope it will not come to this.
