p_mards 1,363
Gibson has had a very good year in the Championship and I'm sure he'll be able to make the step up to the Premier League as he has the brain, strenght and speed to do so. He isn't very good on the ball but at least he doesn't try to play football in dangerous areas. There seems to have been a bit of an media orgy at the moment over ball playing CB's, with John Stones the meat in the middle of that sandwich, so the defensively solid defenders seem to get overlooked. I suppose that now that Gibson can't be labelled a "Championship defender" it will be less controversial for Hodgson to select him.
ManBearPig 1,833
On the ball Gibson isn't good enough yet. But with a manager like Karanka, you can tell his defensive game aswell as Ayala has improved no end.
Borodane 6,246
If he performs well in the Prem I can't see him being a long way off the English setup. It's not like you are blessed with high quality defenders like just a few years ago. Stones, Jagielka, Cahill, Smalling and the fringe players like Shawcross is who he has to compete with (who else?). And if Hodgson really wants a left fóoted player Gibson has a big advantage. Unless he falls through next season I'm sure he will be included in the england squad at some point.

Absolutely, I've said a couple of times on here that I believe Gibson is a better out and out defender than John Stones. Stones has more potential but needs a coach/manager that can take him back to the basics in terms of defending, not Roberto Martinez who praises everything that moves. Jagielka is on his way out, hence why he was included for this summer, so I think with a good season in the Prem Gibson will get a call up sooner rather than later.
Essuuaitch 330
i know it was said slightly tongue in cheek on the eiro thread that maybe Gibson should be in the squad and possibly with our bias. BUT WHY NOT.... apparantly bemoaning the lack odf a left footed central defender. Ive watched Stones several times and he can be everything all in one performance from cultured to comical . Cahill will always have a tendency to be rash now and then even though hes reasonably solid otherwise, Jagielka has looked sluggish this last season but is still consideered a top candidate for squad choices and Smalling .....is it cos hes playing for manyoo that he gets hyped up so much hes so error strewn its farcicle that he gets to be pretty much the first fdefender written on the team sheet. So yeah.......Why not Ben Gibson.

Especially considering he's had Daley Blind as his CB partner for a good period of time!
wilsoncgp 9,228
Smalling is the only one who really deserves to be there in the squad. And Dier if you count him in that position too. I like Daley Blind but he does not feel like a centre back to me. More of a midfielder. I've always thought they've been getting Rojo and Blind the wrong way round.

ASDFC101 9
I don't see any reason why Ben Gibson can't get a call up if he has a decent season in the premier league. Caulker got a game or two and he is shocking, and considering any other English cb's, there's not much outstanding quality there.
Tom 2,492
I wonder who the first call would be to if a CB got injured tomorrow? I know Dier is there as extra CB cover aw well as midfield, but presumably if it happened early enough, Roy would call a replacement. I'm not saying it would be Gibson, more likely Jagielka or Phil Jones, but I wonder how high on the list Ben actually is?
Borodane 6,246
Shawcross? Or is he already in the squad?
wilsoncgp 9,228
Shawcross probably ahead of Gibson but he's not in the squad, nope. Smalling, Stones and Cahill are the officially recognised centre-backs with Dier more than capable of filling in that position if needs be.
