A great Athletic article on our youth recruitment in London (copied from the other site): Saturday afternoon in the north London postcode of N22: on White Hart Lane a steady stream of fans make t

Superb article from The Athletic published today... Gives you a real sense that something special is being built. We've been crying out for this for so long.   Michael Walker 2h ago  2

The Times interview today with Chuba. I’ve missed all the pics out as I don’t know how to get the whole article across and it’s behind a firewall, but you get a good feeling of what he thinks.

I do wonder if the fact that we got worse after sacking southgate and he then went on to manage England is in some ways playing into his thoughts.

We also got worse whilst Southgate was here.  Southgate got the England job because after leaving us he either couldn't or wouldn't get another club job and got a nice cushy role within the FA.  Even then he still only got the job after Allardyce did whatever he did and got the boot.

Thing is, Southgate had a much tougher job in taking over the reins while we were in the PL. He was clearly out of his depth there and we had a horrendous season, but at least he was showing promise and delivering results in the Championship, right up to the point he was sacked.

Which makes it all the more insane to me why he was sacked when he was. The time to do it would have been around January of the 2008-09 season, bringing in a manager that might have been capable of keeping us in the PL.

I still think Gareth could have come good for us, given time. Instead we fell into a cycle of knee jerk reactions, getting rid of managers at odd times and bringing in hugely contrasting new ones, lurching from one philosophy to another.

Karanka was the only one who looked like returning some stability, but then we had the personality clashes and instead of ditching the players who weren't happy, we took the easy option of sacking the manager...

AnglianRed I agree on both points. I feel like Lamb turned Gibbo's head with the thought that they could bring in Strachan.

I was probably one of the few but I wished we had kept AK. I think we would most likely be in the prem now or spent the last few years as a yo-yo club.

I think quite a lot of us were unhappy when AK was sacked, I certainly was.

I think those of us who had been around a while knew it would be tough whilst others got caught up in gibbos challenging for Europe line

One of the other journalists, aye 😛

I'm not going to say who it or confirm or deny any names unless they say it's okay (which they won't, obviously!)

No problem, It’s their business and of no importance, glad they like the forum though.

Yes I could see the good that AK had done and backed him when the whole Charlton shenanigans was going on, it was a shame that Gibbo lost his nerve and sacked him. On the other hand I was very much anti Monk, right from the outset never warmed to him and was never convinced he was the man to smash the league.

I think if AK had been kept on and the playing staff returned to the promotion winning squad he'd have taken us straight back up, just an opinion but the stability would have saved all this flip flopping.

I think if you forget all the background noise, what was going on behind the scenes, then yeah. But he had fallen out with everyone and whilst he clearly has the ability and had the squad capable of coming back up, there was just such a breakdown of communication and stuff, he had lost control and positivity was bleeding out of the club.

I've no doubts about Aitor's ability as a manager in this division but it was right for him to leave.

I really dont think Gibbo helped Aitor. He brought Woody back, appointed Agnew and then kept giving him unwanted gifts.

Gibbo should have backed AK as he was the gaffe. I have no doubts we would be either in the prem or yo yoying with AK.

To then replace Aitor with Monk was madness. The squad needed evolution not revolution. Pulis would have been the perfect replacement but all of a sudden the whole blueprint was ripted up and we expected players to change to a style of play they were (and still are) incapable of playing.

We have done the a similar thing this year. We had the best defence in the league last year and instead of building on that and adding a few bits of quality we throw it all out and try and change a playing style in one summer.

I think you're forgetting just how bad those last few months of Pulis was.

Pretty much the whole fanbase wanted us to change our style.

If you could choose 2 forwards from any previous Boro season in history and add them to our squad for the rest of this season who would you choose?

I'd bring back the Yak and chuck Viduka up there with him.
