I mean they're great in engineering for calculating things like reliability of equipment and maintenance requirements, but sport is a lot more unpredictable. Old Codger 3,063 Posted August 16, 2022 Share Posted August 16, 2022 Statistics are useful but not vital, the best evidence is usually visual but if someone notices weak or strong points through data collected, it can be very beneficial if used correctly. Knowing a goalkeepers strong points can help a forward and I am sure that keepers will study opponents penalty takers for preferences to give a couple of examples. Others need to be assessed more carefully. If striker A scores fifteen goals a season but they are all against teams at bottom end of the division, is he more valuable than a guy who scores five goals a season to earn 1-0 wins against promotion rivals (hypothetically). same with a defender that can make a lot of tackles in centre of pitch compared to a lesser number in more "dangerous" areas.
