As an outsider I think England's best possible starting.lineup is-

Hart

Johnson cahill jagielka baines

-------------gerrard----------

-----henderson-----wishire----

--welbeck----rooney--sturridge

Play like liverpool do in terms of shape and I think that might get you out of the group. Maybe.

At least we're in a group. Sorry, couldn't help myself :P

Anyway, I like the suggestion, even though I'm not a massive fan of the 4-3-3. But against better teams (and Italy and Uruguay both are) that might be a good shout. Most team suggestions (mine included) probably leave us too open.

I would go along with that team, only change I would make is Barkley in for wither Wellbeck or Henderson depending on the system.

My team to start against Italy

Hart

Walker cahil jags Cole

Gerrard Carrick

Townsend Rooney ox

Sturridge

Carrick because he can keep the ball better than most in the premier league and it's something we don't do well enough and with the conditions they will be playing in certainly require it. Cole above brings just because he has the experience and it's important we are solid defensively first up and he is a better defender.

GKs:Hart, Foster, Forster

Df: Baines, Cole, Jagielka, Cahill, Dawson, Jones, Flanagan, Johnson

Mid: Gerrard, Henderson, Wilshere, Barkley, Lampard, Milner, Townsend

For: Sturridge, Rooney, Sterling, Defoe, Oxlade

-----------Hart----------

Johnson--Jags--Cahill--Baines

-----Gerrard--Henderson----

----------Wilshere-------

Sterling--Rooney--Sturridge--

I would like to find a place for Welbeck and Lallana, I really would, but I cant see anyone I'd sacrifice.

My "Strange Decisions:"

- Dawson for Smalling. Dawson having a good season, older, calmer head on him. Jones is in (versatility). Flanagan in for Walker, I think Walker is a crap defender, good going forward. Flanagan is in great from, and can play Left or Right comfortably.

- Milner has to be in because he offers something completely different, can play left right or centre, and generally doesn't ever let down.

- Defoe in, he gives us something different and is the only predator we have really.

Most of my squad is based on giving us options to switch our style if things arent going for us, and give us versatility.

I think if Milner was in a team where he started week in week out he'd be part of most people's squad selections on here. And I agree with BD about how he doesn't let anyone down. If the team is a bit open and exposed, he's definitely the right type of player to bring on for a out and out flair player as he still offers enough going forward (that is his primary role after all) but he's also a genuine fighter who offers a bit more defensive stability.

But, as mentioned before, the lack of first team action is the problem. A big problem. It's touch and go if he goes. But that 'different' option and versatility that BD mentions is why I'd lean slightly towards his inclusion. Just. And though I'm a big fan of bringing a lot of young flair options to this World Cup (not just because they are our future, but because most of them are genuinely our best players at the moment), there has to be a middle ground.

Agree 2Plus2. I think Milner is the kind of player you start with against Brazil, Spain, Germany or to help close out a result. It would be very easy to leave him out in favour of a Rodriguez, but we need different types of players. If we cant find a way through or cant retain the ball, we need to be able to switch our style, formation, tactics to make it happen. You cant do this if you have all of the Rodriguez's, Welbecks, Lallana's because they play in a similar way.

In our tough group games against Italy and Uruguay if we set out to play open expansive football we will be ripped to pieces as we just aren't good enough to go toe to toe with their quality so we will have to rely on a few "safe" options like Milner to tighten us up out of possession. Against Costa Rica we will be able to be far more attack minded.

I really hope this World Cup is entertaining as recent tournaments have been pretty boring. The 2002 World Cup was the best I can remember.
