Curtis Main on. It's a good job we brought Williams back from his loan or he might be in danger of actually getting some game time.

I didnt say anything about bombing forward, just that ones main purpose should be to create from deep and support the attacking midfielders and ones is to shield the defence. Of course roles can interchange to an extent but for the most part these jobs should be filled by a specialist.

Agree they should be filled by a specialist but at this level you don't get too many of them, i can see what you mean about helping the attack but the defensive side of the system relies on two DM's being in the right position or you become easy to break down if an opponent striker drops deep into the square of space that is left open

Only a few dart forward really, main one that I can think of is Toure, although I'm not sure if City still play 4231.

Not 100% on whether they do either to be fair

They are tonight and toure is involved all the time when they go forward

There are other things to consider, is someone dropping in for him when he goes forward?

Are they playing higher up the pitch and not giving the opponents a second on the ball, forcing the opponents to go for the long ball into the space behind, where the keeper will have a higher than normal starting position and come and sweep up play? (can only really be done with top class players due to their anticipation of where the ball is going in the opponents half)

Also an interesting thing about Man city is that they don't actually do ball work during the week the majority of weeks, they work on movement patterns, fitness and tactical stuff, maybe why they're able to play in that way.

I can't think of many teams that play with two out and out defensive midfielders? Spurs, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool have all played it this season and the players they've had in there have been the likes of Dembele, Paulinho, Toure, Gerrard, Henderson, Ramires, Lampard. All of them get forward with a certain amount of regularity. I suspect weaker teams playing against better opposition will be more defensive for obvious reasons but if you're looking to be the aggressor then one of those two has to be more attack minded and prepared to get forward.

It's not as if they are both going to sit in their own half the whole game, they'll still be in or close to the opponents final third, but they'll stay in that area unless there is a blatantly obvious space to exploit, they're in that area to keep possession ticking over until one of the four other attacking players create space so they can drop deeper as soon as possession is lost while the other 4 press the ball to force it into those deeper players.

If you look at the majority of those example you just gave proves what i've just said above

Those players all do more than that though, don't they. I mean we know that from watching them every week.
