It’s been way too long since I have been able to attend a U18 match let alone do a match report, so sun shining off to Rockliffe to watch the Tyne-Tees U18 derby game.

How looks can be deceiving though, it was bitterly cold and blowing hard but the pitch looked in fantastic condition.

Middlesbrough since announcing which scholars would be kept on and which would be released have been blooding some U16s and today was no different. Two started the game. Alex Pattison in a central midfield role and Harry Chapman in a wide right role.

Middlesbrough should have opened the scoring early on, the Newcastle defence were to casual in moving the ball around and Thomas McAloon closed down the right centre back well making a great block and setting away Jordan Jowers, his touch seemed slightly heavy and as he raced away the keeper did well to come out and block the young Boro forwards goal bound effort.

Newcastle hit straight back, a long ball from right to left by Daniel Barlaser found Joe Kerridge the wrong side of Boro right back Nathan Plews, he took the ball down well and kept ahead of the Boro defender before sliding the ball past keeper Joe Fryer to give the visitors the lead. The home side were furious that the throw which started the Newcastle move was wrongly given to the away side. But the goal stood and Boro were 0-1 down.

GOAL – Newcastle 0-1 Kerridge

Newcastle could have doubled their advantage when Greg Olley got onto a poor headed clearance, he allowed the ball to bounce before striking his volley just over the Boro goal.

Middlesbrough regrouped and came back at the visitors, Harry Chapman on the right cut past two players before his shot was blocked away, and he got the ball back and again ran at the Newcastle defence before being crudely brought down. The resulting free kick was cleared out to McGinley who cut in from the left to win Boro a corner but Boro couldn’t make the pressure count.

At the other end Boro had keeper Joe Fryer to thank for keeping it 0-1. Newcastles right back cut inside his man and his cross found Tom Heardman who flicked it back towards the corner where it came only to see Fryer somehow get an outstretched hand to it and flick it away. Superb save!

Newcastle keeper Paul Woolston had little to do though, his only real save came from a deflected McAloon drive.

Half Time Middlesbrough 0 Newcastle 1

Boro Sub – McAloon off Mondal on.

The home side started the second half much better, playing against the wind seemed to help them. U16 Harry Chapman saw a lot more of the ball and put pressure instantly on the Newcastle left back. He lofted a ball into the box to find fellow U16 Alex Pattison who turned well but saw his effort saved. Boro were struggling with the height of Heardman at the back though. Newcastle were again thwarted by Fryer, a very good run from the Newcastle 7 (Jonathyn Quinn?) saw him get into the Boro box and cut inside, his shot was well saved though.

Boro sub – Plews Off, Wyke on.

Nathan Plews was replaced after an hour on his comeback from long term injury, the run out will have been a good test for him as he looks to regain his touch and match fitness.

Chapman was quickly becoming Boro’s best outlet, running at pace and committing his man into tackles then skipping inside or laying the ball off to Callum Johnson to move it across to the other flank.

Boro sub – Johnson off, Hetherington on.

Hetheringon same on from the U16 match where he had already netted twice and moved up front to partner Jowers.

Boro looked more cutting straight away and had a goal chalked off for offside. Chapman had floated the ball from right to left where it was superbly dispatched into the top corner on the volley only for the linesman to raise his flag. What a goal that would have been if it had stood.

Chapman again was the chief instigator of opportunities, he got past his man and crossed low but the Newcastle defence managed to clear just before Mondal could get on the end of it. Pattison created next for Jowers but his shot was blocked.

The game was more spread out and Newcastle were able to take advantage of the space, Fryer parried well from Olley before quickly grabbing the ball but he was unable to do anything when a Barlaser shot took a huge deflection, wrong footing the young Boro keeper and nestling in the back of the net.

GOAL – Newcastle Barlaser 0-2

Full Time Middlesbrough 0 Newcastle 2

Boro: Fryer, Plews (Wyke), Helm, Elsdon, McGinley, Wheatley, Johnson (Hetherington), Pattison, Jowers, Chapman, McAloon (Mondal)

Unused: O’Neill, Pears.

Newcastle: Paul Woolston, Michael Newberry, Ryan McKinnon, Ben Drennan, Adam Laidler, Liam Smith, Greg Olley, Daniel Barlaser, Jonathyn Quinn, Tom Heardman, Joe Kerridge

Unused: Ben Smith, Macauley Booth, James Atkinson, Jack Hunter, Andy Hall

Thoughts/Opinions, MOTM.

Wheatley and Johnson were very workman like in the middle of the park allowing Pattison to break forward at times. Plews will be all the better for the minutes after his return from injury. Helm who is naturally a right back did very well at centre back with Elsdon alongside him considering the giant they faced. Mondal controlled his strike superbly well but unfortunately had strayed offside.

Man of the match for me was young Harry Chapman, skilful on the ball, didn’t really get to show that in the first half but in the second was at the centre of most of Boro’s attacks. Looks composed on the ball and a real prospect for the future.
