So essentially we can have losses up to £8m. Cause we all know SG will supplement those losses?

Essentially that is correct as far as FFP goes at least.

well, we were losing 18m a year 3 or 4 years ago, have we/can we reduce that to less than 8m this year?

We lost £14m according to the last set of published accounts. That was with a wage bill of £18.5m and revenue of £14m. According to AV today, the wage bill is still at £16m. So in other words our wage bill alone is greater than the club's total revenue. Not good at all.

Haven't been on today can someone sum up what's happened??

We might be signing some players this week. That's it in a nutshell.

So that means we're currently losing £2million, and we're allowed losses of £8million. So does that mean we've got £6million + whatever we make from player sales to spend on players and their wages?

Gibson has been doing this and more. It dropped to £8M losses from, i think, £12M last season and will drop to £3M eventually. Hence why its now or never.

That's what we WERE working towards...i don't know exactly where we sit with that in terms of outgoings etc. i know we'll be right up around that limit if not over it, with Gibson gambling on a rise in attendances.

No, that £14M loss needs to come down to £8M.

Why are people moaning about what we can and can't afford? We have no idea what we can and can't afford, only one man does and he's willing to push the boat out. Instead of finally enjoying something to be excited about we moan instead. Just enjoy the ride ffs.

agree 100 %

Why moan about getting players in?? Better that we spend nothing and stay in Championship for another 5 years?

Its obv. that SG is going for it this season, he is wise, if he wants to spend 5 mil. on Vossen then let him!!

Agreed wholeheartedly. Some of the experts on here are so contradictory. This club was never going to get a play off place, let alone an auto promotion place with the personel available remaining from last season. Its no fluke that we finished mid table. Improvements have to be made. The aternative and quite surprisingly the choice of some financial and football experts would be to stagnate in the Championship. Well wake up experts. This club survives in the Championship because of the largess of Mr Gibson, The only way the club can stand on its own feet is in the Premiership or as a perenial yo yo club. Some of us misguided supporters want the club to show ambition and to provide us with the opportunity to be able to watch a spectacle on a Saturday afternoon.

Stagnating in the Championship would result in diminishing gate receipts year on year and would ultimately make the famous Boro academy unable to attract the best potention young footballers. Making the club ever more dependent on SG. He obviously does not want that situation to continue indefinitely. Why would he?

I honestly think that some experts on this forum wear their support of Boro like a hair shirt.

I don't see what the problem is? This is a transfer thread. We're discussing the implications of FFP on our transfer budget. It's not a case of not showing ambition..it's the reality of Financial Fair Play.

No mate, you've misunderstood what I wrote there. The £16m is our wage bill alone apparently - that is according to AV. It doesn't take into account the other costs of running the business - Academy running costs, stadium and training ground running costs, transfer fees, any interest payments, whatever we need to spend money on basically.

In the last set of accounts our total revenue was about £14m. The wage bill on it's own was £18.5m and our total losses were £14m. I don't have the accounts to look at but that is a very basic summary.

Where it gets complicated for FFP purposes is that certain things can be excluded such as the academy running costs and how transfer fees are dealt with in the accounts.

Forget FFP for a moment though and just consider a company that is losing £10m+ each year. Gibson is a wealthy guy but those losses are big even for him. It was £38m over the previous 3 years I believe and whatever it was for the previous 10/15 years - £100m? That's a lot of money for anyone to be losing without it becoming an issue. I really don't see how we can continue on this course before Gibson will have to change things. What people are saying about Gibson having a big go for it this season really might be the truth and it might be through necessity as I believe we'll get to a point where he has to say enough is enough.

Example of transfers these days,

Agreed fee of £5m.

Club A will pay club B £2.5m now,

and then over the course of the next 3 seasons, pay off the remaining £2.5m

This benefits Club A because on the accounts that £5m transfer appears as a £2.5m transfer, and it benefits club B because they will have a source of income for the next 3 seasons allowing them to spend more money in the long term.

It's a very loose example.

You can only spend what you make, essentially - so by having the transfer fee paid over a few years, club B can spend "more money" (in a way) over the 3 seasons.
