Extended match highlights

Whilst one Boro team left it late against a seaside town another Boro side found goals easy to come by against their seaside opponents.

It was a very foggy evening at Billingham Synthonia’s ground where Middlesbrough met Marske in the North Riding Senior Cup quarter final. Boro settled quickly and had a chance in the opening few moments when a short throw to McAloon on the left allowed the forward to burst into the box, he then laid it off to Fewster just inside the 18 but his shot was pulled wide.

Boro man McAloon was a constant thrown in the sides of the Marske back line on his come back from a serious ankle injury which required a operation late last year.

A short Boro corner saw the ball get worked to Ryan Brobbel who drove to the edge of the box, his curled effort was deflected though and went wide for another Boro corner.

It wasn’t all Middlesbrough early on though, Marske had a good chance when Wright made space for himself before shooting low and hard across Fryer, who got down well to save before Griffiths cleared.

Bradley Fewster, the England U18 international went down moments later, he received treatment but walked straight off to the dug out, Boro continued with 10 men whilst preparing a substitute.

Boro Sub – Fewster off, Tinkler on.

Boro were pushing forward and looked the more settled of the two sides, Marskes O’Sullivan saw yellow for a poor late challenge on the right side of the box on Brobbel. Marske were kept to counter attacking football, Fryer had to be aware when Garvie hit a low shot but he was equal to it making a good save. And Wright had a great chance when he pounced on a poor back header by Burn before Fyrer stopped the attack with a good save.

McAloon broke the deadlock with just over half a hour gone. He picked up the ball in the centre left channel before skipping past his man and forcing his way into the box between two more defenders, he slid the ball through the legs of the advancing Robert Dean and into the net.

GOAL BORO – McAloon 1-0

Ryan Brobbel came close next with a shot across the face of the Marske goal, and it wasn’t long before Boro doubled their lead. A corner from Brobbel was flicked on by Kitching before it found its way to Weledji in the centre of the goal and the centre back tapped the ball into the roof of the net!

GOAL BORO – Weledji 2-0

Middlesbrough were running riot and really should have added a 3rd goal when McAloon cut Marske apart again but his shot was clearned off the line by O’Sullivan who just managed to get back in time.

Half Time Middlesbrough 2 Marske 0

Marske started the second half brightly, Garvie found Wright who shot low but Fryer had his angles right to save. Butterworth tried his luck from a good 25 yards out but his shot was well over the Boro bar.

Brazilian Joao Neto had Boro’s first chance of the second half when he stepped past his marker but a weak shot was easily saved by former Boro U16 Robert Dean in the Marske net. Neto wasn’t to be denied when he received the ball off Kitching he struck the ball across Dean , the keeper managed to get a good hand to it but the ball trickled in off the far post.

GOAL BORO – Neto 3-0

Boro Sub – Neto off, Jones on.[/size]

Marske subs –Owens & MacDonald off, Brunskill & Kelly on.

It was all Boro for a good period of time, Kitching tuned well and drilled a low shot that was well saved.

Marske Sub – Wright off, Hood on.

It wasn’t long before Boro were on the attack again, a low cross from the right by Robbie Tinkler was superbly flicked into the net by Mark Kitching.

GOAL BORO – Kitching 4-0

Kitchings goal saw a large swathe of fans leave a freezing cold Billingham, but there was more to come for those that stuck around for the remaining 20 minutes.

Jordan Jones playing wide left skipped past one man before bring crudely scythed down. Griffiths stepped up to strike the freekick and Dean made a great save at his near post flicking it into the woodwork to deny the Boro midfielder.

Boro Sub – McAloon off, Elsdon.

Matty Elsdon came on in a rather unfamiliar attacking role.

Marske continued though and should be applauded for not giving up, Bott struck a fantastically controlled volley from 20 yards but Fryer saved well.

Priestly Griffiths scored the goal of the game shortly after though. He fakes two Marske players with a shot before moving the ball between both of them and striking the ball into the net with the aid of the par post.

GOAL BORO – Griffiths 5-0

The floodgates were well and truely open with Boro putting wave upon wave of attacks onto the seasiders back line. Jordan Jones made a central run after being found by Atkinson and he finished well putting the ball into the corner of the net.

GOAL BORO – Jones 6-0

Marske did have something to cheer about and their remaining fans erupted when Gott, indide the Boro box on the left side cut back onto his right foot and shot sharply into the net at Fryers near post.

GOAL MARSKE – Gott 6-1

Full Time Middlesbrough 6 (McAloon, Weledji, Neto, Kitching, Griffiths, Jones) Marske 1 (Gott)

Middlesbrough – Fryer, Atkinson, Burn ©, Weledji, Bennett, Griffiths, Brobbel, Kitching, Fewster (Tinkler), Neto (Jones), McAloon (Elsdon).

Unused – Coddington, Maloney.

Marske – Dean, Gibson, O’Sullivan, Butterworth, Bott, Hollingsworth, MacDonald (Kelly), Gott, Wright (Hood), Owens (Brunskill), Garvie.

Thoughts/MOTM

Boro started slowly but thats more to do with Marske being solid as a team before coming to life and really pressing a good side. Griffiths and Kitching were formidable in midfield, Kitching setting up 2 and scoring 1. Griffiths nearly scored a wonderful freekick before scoring a fantastic solo goal.

McAloon on his return from injury was a constant threat to Marske. But for me the MOTM award goes to midfielder Griffiths
