U18's vs. Wolves (H) Sat 14th Feb - Match Report

Recommended Posts

Victory today for Middlesbrough U18s guaranteed they could finish no lower than 2nd and cement their place in the end of season play offs where the top four from the North will join the top four from the South.

Boro got off to a flyer, a cross field pass right to left found Tavernier who passed to Johnson, he ran along the edge of the box the ball got deflected into the path of Chapman who sliced it right footed into the corner of the goal the keeper beaten to his left!

GOAL BORO – Chapman 1-0

The Early goal seemed to knock Wolves onto the ropes and it took them a good ten minutes to find their feet again, by far a stronger side physically Wolves pushed and started to push Boro back. Wheatley was being over run in the middle of the park where he was isolated on his own. The Wolves number 11 thought he had l;evelled with what was a fantastic goal, he meat two men before driving into the middle of the pitch and striking the bouncing ball into the top right hand corner of Dawson’s net leaving the keeper grasping at air but the assistant referee had her flag up and the ball was pulled back and the goal chalked off!

Wolves did have the ball in the net again soon after, a Freekick came in from the Wolves right side, a poor Elsdon header fell at the edge of the box to Wolves number 11, he had way too much time as none of the other Boro players closed him down before he hit the bouncing ball on the volley and it rocketed in off the post 1-1!

GOAL WOLVES – Number 11 1-1

Wolves continued to press Boro back way deep into their own half, a small tactical change saw McGoldrick move to right wing back and Helm move into centre back alongside Fry and Elsdon. Chapman went on a mazy run which only ended when he over stepped the ball but it fell kindly to Jordan Jowers who strike was blocked away for a corner. The corner came out to Wheatley who stuck the ball from distance but he got well under the shot and it went well over. Boro continued pressing and won another corner that was swung in deeper, Wolves cleared it for a corner on the other side and were caught out when Junior Mondal went short to Chapman, he swung the ball in lower to the front post where Elsdon ran into space ahead of his marker and hooked the ball home! 2-1.

GOAL BORO – Elsdon 2-1

Wolves had it all to do again, they had been the better of the two sides in the first half, with most of the possession. A deeo cross from their left side found the number 7 in the middle he rose well and forced Dawson into a acrobatic two handed save, pushing the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner Dawson rose well to collect and was clattered into by the Wolves number 5 well after taking it. Both players went down with head injuries which caused the Referee to blow for half time a few moments early.

Half Time Middlesbrough 2 Wolves 1

Boro Sub – Dawson off, Pears on.

The second half started with a change in the Boro goal, Dawson took a good 5 minutes to get to his feet after the collision at the end of the first half, and went away holding his head. Before he had got up the decision to replace him with Pears was evident. The keeper warming up through the break took his place between the Boro sticks.

Wolves started how they left off, a long ball found their number 7 the wrong side of Matty Elsdon, the Boro defender though was well covered by his defensive rock Dael Fry who made a superb tackle, the Wolves players went up appealing for a freekick but nothing but ball from Fry. A mistake by Wolves cost them though, they had the ball on their own left side and went to pass low across the field, Tavernier latched onto it and dashed forward into the box, he was always ahead of his man who tried to touch the ball but only managed in bringing down the U16 player in the box. Joe Wheatley the Boro captain stepped up confidently and hit it high to the keepers right, the keeper guessed right but couldn’t get a hand to it!

GOAL BORO – Wheatley (Pen) 3-1

Jordan Jowers should have extended the lead even further, his persistence saw him break through the Wolves back line, with only the keeper to beat he managed to curl the ball over the bar.

The next goal wasn’t far away though, Harry Chapman picked the ball up running across the box from left to right, he had the pace to take him past his marker who was in the quicksand as the keeper came to narrow the angle Chapman show across him, it was goalbound but took a slight deflection off the Wolves number 3.

GOAL BORO – Chapman 4-1

Chapman was on fire and Wolves were capitulating, Johnson played a good little pass to Chapman just inside the box on Boro’s left he went outside his man before turning on the pace, the keeper came out and Chapman slid it past him into the net to claim his hat trick!

GOAL BORO – Chapman 5-1 (Hat-trick)

It was constant wave upon wave of Boro attacks, McGoldrick had held on the right side since the tactical chance but when he came forward in the second half, he found Chapman who drove at the heart of the Wolves back line, a lay off to the right found Jowers overlapping he could well have shot but he pulled it back across the goal towards Junior Mondal at the back post but Wolves managed to clear for a corner.

Thee game has started to become a little broken, Junior Mondal and the Wolves number 8 were warned for pushing each other and moments later Junior Mondal received a booking for a late challenge. Pears was called into action tipping a 18 yard effort over from the Wolves number 7.

Jowers picked the ball up deep in his own half and despite protestations from McGoldrick went left towards Johnson, he picked him out well and the Boro midfielder laid in Chapman again. He skipped through the defence and again was one on one with the keeper, this time he dinked it over the keeper as he went down and into the net, sublime finishing from the young forward.

GOAL BORO – Chapman 6-1

Chapman was a threat every time he got the ball, he picked it up central and the Wolves defence seemed to part like the Red Sea did for Moses! Chapman sped into the gap before the number 5 took a almighty swipe at him missing the ball and crashing into the young Boro forwards legs. The referee instantly blew for Boro’s second penalty of the match. Wheatley stepped up and hit it into the same place, the keeper again got the side right but couldn’t stop it and Boro had extended the lead.

GOAL BORO – Wheatley 7-1 (Penalty)

Boro  wanted more, a Jowers effort was blocked to Johnson who had a good low snap shot and the Wolves keeper saved well albeit in a rather not traditional way with his feet.

Boro Sub – Junior Mondal off, Patrick Reading on.

Boro Sub – Marcus Tavernier off, Liam Heggerty on.

Thoughts/Man of the Match.

Boro could have wrapped up the league title today but a victory for Manchester United over Everton means they now need just a single point. But the win does mean they are guaranteed an end of season play-off spot. Boro were second best to Wolves in the first half despite the scoreline but in the second half they turned it on and blew their opponents away. It was good to see Callum Johnson in his usual midfield role, and Helm returning at the back. Joe Wheatley was slightly over run in the first half, but in the second he came into his own, playing a captain marvel like role, dominant in the tackle, leading by example and never shirking our of a opportunity to win his side the ball back. Organising play and dictating here and there, very much like a Bryan Robson of years gone past. (im not sure Joe would know who Bryan Robson was as a player mind he is too young!) Tavernier linked up well going forward and did well to win a penalty. Johnson got in on the assistant also. But one cannot look past the sheer brilliance of young Harry Chapman. The Hartlepool born forward who has impeccable close control. He finished superbly today and his fourth when he dinked the ball over the keeper was sublime.

Boro visit Blackburn next week looking for the point to win the Premier League U18 North division, good luck to all next week, RED ARMY ON THE RISE!
