Our spending is more or less the same as last year, apart from the De Roon fee I would have expected us to spend quite a bit more, a wide man was a priority, we should have splashed the cash and had someone signed and settled in this position well before now.

We spent that money hoping we got promoted. Had we not we would have had to sell in the 3rd year of FFP.

Everyone is forgetting that the money spent was a huge gamble and that has to be factored in to what we're spending now.

And that is exactly why we don't have trigger happy people in charge. What if our targets and scouted players don't want to come until they have explored their possibilities? Should we just throw millions at some random player a no-good agent tries to sell us? Just to "splash the cash".  As Lurker says we have essentially spent 25 million in fees and then add the wages of the likes Valdes, Ramirez etc. it's all about getting the right players in and not just "splash the cash" for the sake of it.

Nobody mentioned any random player or splashing the cash for the sake of it, if we have been scouting for a winger then we should know by now who we want and those players should be settled into the squad and adapting to our style of play ( that's what the friendlies are for) rather than waiting to the last minute to sign someone.

Sometimes you have to pay for quality that's the way it is.

Which winger that has moved or is rumoured to be moving should we have signed?

Huge big fat no to Boilesen. Hasn't been any good for years. Could be decent for a championship team but honestly I think he will never recover from his injuries. His father is his agent and they have made some horrible choices which has really set his career back. They thought he would be in demand but they are now left scraping the barrel. I would be hugely disappointed if we are after him because he showed promise 3-4 years ago. Even though he is out of contact I would stay well clear.

It's not that simple though. Players get advised by agents to wait for other clubs, and then the selling club need to make sure they can get their replacement, so you're in a chain. More deals get done in the last two weeks of August than the whole rest of the window for a reason.

Don't know all the players that are available in the Bundesliga, Serie A and LA Liga, perhaps you are clued up on it, unless all wingers only move in the last week leading up to the start of the season.

But you can't force players to sign can you? It's no crime for players to wait and see what their options are. We still have 4 weeks to strengthen. They might not have played with the team in pre season but we are hardly alone with that problem.

He is the prime example of why you shouldn't have your dad as your agent. A competent agent would have sorted a decent move for him at least a year ago instead of telling Ajax his client is willing to wait a year and leave on a free, hence leaving him in the reserves

Didnt we try to get Antonio, but West Ham flatly refused to sell. Like lurker says we may be interested in loads of players but the selling club have to want to sell. I wonder if we are still interested in Monterro? I have a suspicion the longer we dont get a winger we may start sniffing round Jesus Navas. Hes moving into the last year of his contract at city.
