Boro vs Sunderland (a) 2-1

Recommended Posts

My bus to Sunderland on Sunday is to have a police escort all the way from Stockton to Sunderland. Just me or slightly unnecessary?

It's to make sure you don't go for a sneaky drink and no mooning at the natives  ;)

Then there's the overtime rates for the local constabulary to consider, while they're on one of their favourite jaunts of the season. I bet they auction the escort jobs at the nick. :)

If anyone is driving up, best place to park is in the university behind the premier inn, 10 minute walk from the ground and only costs a 2/3 quid

First visit to sunderland as an away fan, is it really as bad as people say?

Bad memories of Stadium of *****, 2008 turning up as cheeky late teens in boiler suits with gas masks to be told that we had to remove them and i only had a t-shirt and shorts on under. Then a Daryl Murphy winner in the last 5 minutes or something.

Even better, just park in the streets surrounding the university, it's mainly student lets, not sure about on a matchday but i've never struggled to get parked there in my uni days, and if you can't be bothered to walk to the ground and are feeling brave you could always get the metro from the university just behind the library

After only getting 2 attempts on target do you change anything for the game on Sunday?

No. Stoke are a much better team in every position apart from the striker. We are bound to get more chances against Sunderland. Consistency is a key and we don't have as many games in this league. Leave the changes for the cup game at Fulham.

Do you risk Ayala or Bernardo at CB?

No. It's probably too soon. Let Ayala start against Fulham.

Does Forshaw continue in midfield?

Yes, did well against a brutal Imbula. Is bound to have more space against Sunderland to move forward.

Why didn't Karanka make subs against Stoke?

We were fairly comfortable even though Stoke had most possession and we restricted them to a single free kick. With two subs left I think he wanted to keep his options open. Had we gone ahead he probably would have made a defensive sub, and had we fallen behind Rhodes and Fischer would probably have been sent on. In the end it was Nugent to see the game through and settle for a point.

Is this already a 6 pointer?

I think it is. Odds are that both teams will be in the bottom 6 come May, and it's paramount that we take points from those teams around us.

Other than the change needed, I don't think so. That team from Saturday is good enough to compete against Sunderland. I'd maybe try to switch Adomah and Downing to begin with to see if Sunderland can handle that but then I'd worry we wouldn't defend as effectively as we can against Van Aanholt.

Do you risk Ayala or Bernardo at CB?

Nope. Bench for either of them, sure, if they're ready. But I'd give them another week at least.

Does Forshaw continue in midfield?

Yeah. I thought he had an okay game against Stoke. He showed his qualities which I think is important. Unfortunately, they aren't qualities that are great in either attack or defence, but he's good in both. A balanced player perhaps more suited to a 4-4-2 but he will do for this game, I think.

Why didn't Karanka make subs against Stoke?

I think it's worth considering the De Roon sub as an important one. Aitor doesn't like early subs. I think he'd have been more open to making changes if he had more subs available at the 60 minute mark.

I don't think that's the only reason though. I think he looked at his options on the bench and couldn't see any real pace to get us up the pitch. The best we had was on the pitch, barring perhaps Nugent.

Thus Nugent comes on but he also doesn't want to take Negredo off and remove our target man who also helps us get up the pitch. He decides to take off Ramirez as Nugent can play behind a striker and also perhaps through concern of Ramirez' yellow card.

Is this already a 6 pointer?

Nah, not for me. Every game is important, every point is important, but I think games will only get judged as 6-pointers when we're past the half-way mark and we can see a decent picture of who is around us.

I don't think so. Seems like a solid 11, we don't have much choice at CDM, Fischer is too much of a defensive liablilty (at the moment) to start away, and Negredo got his goal which means he will continue to start over Rhodes.

Bear in mind on our way to "only getting 2 attempts on target" we hit the woodwork three times*, which is closer than a tame shot into the keeper's midriff in my book. If Ramirez can adjust his shot so it's an inch closer, we'll be golden.

*twice?

Do you risk Ayala or Bernardo at CB?

Only if they're fully fit - which is only Karanka's rule anyway. Even if Ayala is fit, he'll probably be benched and brought in at Fulham instead.

Does Forshaw continue in midfield?

As aforementioned, not much choice in the matter - and he's played pretty well. I don't really see Sunderland giving him any greater trouble than Stoke did.

Why didn't Karanka make subs against Stoke?

Was forced to use one early for De Roon, and wanted to see how the game progressed. Decided with the Nugent sub to try and see out the game for a point, which I think was sensible to be fair as we were tiring towards the end.

Is this already a 6 pointer?

Too early in the season to tell, which I guess means no. At least one of the two of us will be in a relegation battle by the end of the season for sure, possibly both. At the moment I think we're the more likely to do well, although Moyes is a good appointment if he can get some signings in. Either way it's probably a good time to play them at the Stadium of ***e.

Yeah they were the only times BD. There was a mis-print in a paper saying Ramirez hit the bar from a free-kick so people might be getting confused with that and the corner kick.

Yep, on a serious note keep your wits about you, not very nice fans when they've won and even worse in defeat.
